This mindset always strikes me as questionable. I am a pretty middle class guy but I funded my entire undergrad with government student loans without problems and I don't understand why low income people can't do the same.
Well, short version, I couldn't get government help 'cause my family is considered upper middle class and I'm not yet independent, plus my grades sucked too hard for grants. Whatever other ways there were I was too lazy to look into.
