Ask HN: How does one get started with data analytics and data science?

For much of my career, I've always enjoyed messing around with large datasets (vs JS or CRUD stuff), but I never truly got a chance to learn more than very basics. I don't know how to do this as a career (or build a biz out of it - products, consulting whatever). How do I get started? What resources are the best? What topics should I start with? And finally, where do I look for projects that I can use as a launchpad for a career in this field?
