Why are you so scared of people being allowed to express their political power? Words and rhetoric is how it’s always been. Are you for censoring all political speech? Given the highly partisan nature of the censorship, difficult to not see it being politically motivated.

You've been using HN primarily for political battle. We ban accounts that do that, regardless of which politics they're battling for, because it destroys what this site is supposed to be for, i.e. curious, thoughtful conversation.

I hate to ban an 11-year-old account, but I had to scroll back two months in your comment history to find a post about ZFS. That's seriously uncool. Between that and the fact that we've warned you many times not to abuse the site like this, I think we have to ban your account and I've done so. If you don't want to be banned, you're welcome to email hn@ycombinator.com and give us reason to believe that you'll follow the rules in the future.

Have y’all considered suspensions (temporary bans) for people to cool off for a few months and reconsider? I’d be curious to see how many came back abusing right away.

Yup, I think it's a good idea and probably worth trying.

Parler refused to remove calls to violence. Calls to violence are not political speech.

Taiwan (Republic of China) maintains a claim to territory currently occupied by the CCP (People’s republic of China). And vice versa for the CCP.

You mean the KMT that set up after they were kicked out of the mainland and took Taiwan right? They also claim all of (outer) Mongolia and basically whatever the Qing dynasty had when it fell. There CPC doesn’t claim Outer Mongolia and its borders are mostly settled with a few conflicts in India and the SCS.

You are referring to the de jure claims, which Taiwan only maintains due to pressure from the PRC. If Taiwan officially cedes these claims, the PRC would respond with economic sanctions, because the PRC wants Taiwan to continue to pretend it is another faction of the same country still fighting the civil war and not an independent country.

Yes. If Taiwan decides to stop being the ROC and instead wants to be the Republic of Taiwan, that would be considered a huge escalation by the PRC. Right now, they are just two sides of a civil war, which the PRC can accept, but succession would be viewed way different.

Luckily, Taiwan can just continue with the status quo and the PRC will probably not invade it, especially when the Americans are hanging out in the Ryukyus so close by to the island.

just for additional context the Taiwan people have no dreams of occupying China by force or any means, other than the dissolution of CCP on its own but even then most Taiwanese wanted to stay as economically independent as possible, since they can fare off better on their own as evident in this current pandemic, restraining ties with China is a good measure

We are not talking about trump. We are talking about Apple, who is forcing other companies to censor their user’s speech and acting as judge and jury on what is acceptable.

Ah, let's talk about Parler specifically then.

https://fortune.com/2021/01/08/parler-violence-trump-2020-el...

https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/01/05/parler-...

https://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2021/01/06/trump-riot-tw...

Based on these articles, it sure sounds to me like Parler users are openly calling for immediate violence.

And this is for the FBI, why is Apple acting as the government’s proxy?

This is just the same lame four excuses [0] to justify censorship and mass surveillance. Just replace terrorism with “inciting violence”.

Now the government doesn’t even need to get their hands dirty to censor the internet, private companies enforce it themselves with with impunity.

A screenshot from ngabbs is supposed to prove what exactly?

Yes but do you? When Twitter suspends your speech do you have a press office to get your word out? If they dare to do it to the president you think they have any reservations about censoring anyone else?

yes, because if they censor too much then parler or any other startup can easily rise up and compete. the barrier to entry is very very low here if there are pissed off users ready to flee. parler being a prime example

But that was banned as well from app stores. There aren't any free, open platforms out there to my knowledge; and if there are, they so obscure, so hard to get into, that might as well not count them as existing.

And you don't own your phone. You have 0 access to it, you can only do with it what the vendor allows you to. The market economy argument just doesn't hold in actual practice, despite its theoretical validity.

No, Apple is trying to ban the alternative product that has been created.

Parler has banned all liberal, communist, and eco friendly speech.

It’s an alternative to Twitter but it got there by being more restrictive.

Sure looks anti-competitive when Parler is deleted from all the app stores now doesn’t it? And we have people vocally calling for Cloudflare and AWS to deny them hosting services.

Then don't download it from the app store.

Not an argument.

Why are you compering him to Trump? Why do you need to defend such person. Road to the hell is paved with good intentions.

This ban was long overdue. Are some people more equal than others?

I may be downvoted here for this statement but that is just some site on the internet. I may be banned from Twitter that is also just another site. Actually was banned from r/Conservative, so what?

Facebook/Twitter are problems because many things, but banning someone for roaring the masses is not one of them.

And arguments like: 'But who is deciding what is hate speech?' seems to me just like fallacy here. Because we have concrete example of spreading misinformation and roaring people in order to undermine civic society. This has already led to violence. 'What if' is just taking away attention from what has already been done.

The relative strengths of the nations help to dictate the terms. Treaty of Nanking was signed after the defeat of the Qing army, you think the terms were favourable to the Qing Emperor?

    > For all the non-TSLA holders on HN (there are many) - is there a price at which you will admit TSLA is successful? And if not, what is the reasoning behind why you will forever see TSLA as unsuccessful? Thank you

China has always been an unequal playing ground for foreign companies. If you want Chinese money, then you get your local Chinese partner company and start the technology transfer.

It’s only fair Chinese companies in America receive some reciprocal treatment.

We’re trying to tell you that this would have happened anyway and contact tracing itself is just another instrument in the surveillance state.

And I’m trying to tell you that this overly simplistic response ignores pragmatic real-world solutions that let people accomplish hard things even with multiple constraints.

It is in fact possible to have effective and privacy preserving contact tracing at scale.
