I'd like to know how to solve the storage dilution problem with stateful apps in k8s where you have to buy 3-18x more raw capacity than desired to meet availability & durability guarantees.
For example if you ran CDB on a baremetal cluster of 3 nodes with 30TB of raw capacity, 15TB is lost to RAID10, 10TB is lost to running a replicated database such as cockroach DB, leaving you with 5TB effective capacity which is a 1/6 dilution of your initial capacity.
If you ran cockroach DB on a replicated network volume, with a replication factor of three, it gets worse. If you bought 30 TB of disks, you'd lose 20 TB to volume replication, ~6.67TB to CDB replication leaving you with 3.3TB of effective capacity or a 1/9 dilution. If those disks were configured with RAID your effective capacity would drop to a 1/18 dilution.
You could achieve a 1/3 dilution which is the effective minimum for a replicated database if you didn't configure RAID, but you increase the impact of disk failure, in that it would take much much longer to recover a cluster.
We (Fraugster Gmbh) are hiring Go developers and devops in Berlin. We've always held a great amount of respect for soundcloud given all that you guys have done for the golang community in Berlin.
If any of you are not based here we can offer relocation/visa support, check my previous comments on whoishiring for more details or contact me directly stefan <at> fraugster <dot> com

Final Year Project (Uni.)
Simulating a small and medium size office wireless network using OPNeT 9.1
June 2013 – Sept 2013
Being an independent worker on the project, I conceptualized and designed a small and medium scale office wireless network for both the mobile and fixed wireless network. The aim was to detect the denial of service using OPNeT 9.1 IT Guru. I also suggested the defense mechanism against the different types of DoS attacks on the network. Simulation methodology was described for the project. The analysis of the simulated results were based on the four major aspects for any network i.e. data drop rate, delay, load and throughput for the network designed. I also validated the results from previous work published by other prominent authors.

Administration (Uni.)
Designing a networking and producing policies for server management, privacy and monitoring.
As a network manager, I designed a three tier network for an insurance company and explained how the requirements are met for 275 users (each user required 2 network interfaces). The designed was easy to extend along with the DMZ and firewalls. I explained the cabling, hardware and security features that were used for the given scenario along with the 99.99% of network uptime during core working hours. I also did the IP addressing of all the users within the company and created VLANs, Subnets, VoIP and remote login features along with the server management privacy policy and data backups.

Improving the design of the medical data
Being an independent worker on the project, I conceptualized and created a new design for improving the design of an existing database to improve the storage procedure using indexes and keys, wrote the transactions to find the prescription for a particular patient, compared the timings from the existing database, improved the physical and the logical design of existing database using SQL management studio 2008R2. Also suggested the techniques used to implement large database that are capable of storing and managing millions of records.

Network Service Management (Uni.)
Designing a network, making SLA and forming a compliance policy
Being an independent worker on the project, I conceptualized and designed a three tier network for 500 users. The users were distributed in three floors. The network design was easy to extend along with the DMZ and firewalls with business requirement of 98% uptime during core working hours and for 5years. Single point of failure, component failure impact analysis and fault tree analysis tests were performed to check the impact of failure on the users. A proper SLA was documented along with the different metrics, their roles and breaching policies. I also made the audit plan for the network and compliance policies both the internal and the external.
