As far as my quick twitter research goes there have been reports¹ to an attack before 2am EST (= 7am UTC). So, is this correlation actually useful or just a gimmick?

> Defense (my field) is very much the same way.

First step here in terms of terminology is to call it "defense" instead of "weapon technology to maim or kill human beings". Having said that, I do believe we need weapon technology to maim and kill human beings.

It is defense against others making weapon technology to maim or kill human beings

what is it that keeps you loyal to xperia?

Nothing. But I want the SD card, dual sim plus eSIM, a headphone jack, a rectangular screen with a decent aspect ratio ideal for wide-format films and scrolling. I will fully concede that Sony's software quality has taken a hit in recent years; they used to be much better in 2016 or so.

have a look at LOS. xperias are well supported.

(Why would people downvote this utterly harmless question? I don't get it.)

I gifted my 6 year old nephew a cheap hand held analog radio (and a few other things to be fair). He loved it. I guess, it must be fascinating for a child to turn a wheel and then different music and voices are coming out of it. Also it has a frequency scale that's controlled by the wheel which I assume is good for training a technical perspective on controlled action and reaction. The antenna has to be pointed in the right direction. Maybe this gets him interested in why that is. Certainly no clean-up-time at all and play-time probably also decent.

> Hard to imagine many things worse than going through the pain of having a kid who seemed lost, getting him back, and then whatever must have been going on more recently that apparently led to this

Also worth considering that Rob Reiner might have played his part in the roots of Nick's troubles ... after all Rob was his father and the drug problems started when he was still a child.

Are you a parent? Do you understand the challenges of parenting that includes the fact that "controlling" your child is ultimately impossible?

Yes, you can be attentive and engaged, ensure they're mentored and guided, are given discipline and instruction, etc. But they're still autonomous units that are going to do what the fuck they want to do.

Of course there are cases of abuse that can damage a child but that should not be a base assumption in this case (his other children appear to be fine).

"Hungry Ghosts" (or "Scattered Minds") by Gabor Maté is a very thought provoking book and quite relevant to the subject.

We are not well-served by treating addiction as simply a matter of will-power and "character".

This isn't to say that we don't all bear responsibility for our conduct as best we can, but sometimes it's way more than that. It's like accusing a schizophrenic of not trying hard enough to "be normal".

Interesting font choice for the code snippets. I wonder if that's been chosen on a whim or if there is a reason for not going with mono space.

The font used for code samples looks nearly the same as "The C++ Programming Languages" (3rd edition / "Wave") by Bjarne Stroustrup. Looking back, yeah, I guess it was weird that he used italic variable width text for code samples, but uses tab stops to align the comments!

Is there a mesh network solution with very low bandwidth by design? "by design" meaning that participants of the network aren't able to increase their bandwidth beyond a defined upper limit. I'm thinking of a bandwidth of about 10kbps. The low bandwidth would practically eliminate problems around spamming and cp. The idea is a network that is only useful for exchanging texts/messages and accessing simple text based websites.

Meshtastic already fulfills that, except for the bit about accessing simple text-based websites, because Meshtastic isn't an IP network. The data rates only go up to 21.88 kbps for the fastest preset: https://meshtastic.org/docs/overview/radio-settings/#presets

the idea is that there would be no point in visiting anything else than text based web-sites or use text-based services. or do you mean that it can't be hooked up to the internet due to its lack of IP protocol?

I think reticulum was made for this exact purpose. It can even work on bandwidths of like bits per minutes.

Let me give you a realistic answer. There are soft and hard criminals. For example: soft criminals buy drugs, hard criminals sell drugs. The soft criminals convert from traditional to digital money (plus maybe a little obfuscation), order and hope for the best. The hard criminals have to solve the difficult problem of reversing that conversion. They'll just have some homeless person open a bank account and then use that for the conversion. If the homeless person gets busted, it better keep its mouth shut - or else.

This seems like a great benchmark task for LLMs.

> nor kids of this generation.

(I fear) the blog of this generation's kids is called TikTok or whatever and the form is video instead of text.

Almost right. The blog of this generation is called YouTube, and there's millions of such videos, with the author mostly talking.

Why? YouTube pays creators, blogs don't.

TikTok is the exact opposite of blogging.

It was about sharing bits of your daily life and personal thoughts and feelings, while building a small community. Having more than 50-100 readers was a major event (and not a thing people aimed for).

That's exactly what TikTok is for ... to the T.
