You know, I've been investing in reference books since Google started failing to accurately report basic equations and constants.

It's kinda nice actually.

1970 called

Hey my encyclopedia had yearly updates through 2008!! :D

But seriously, its actually nicer... and the equations on the back covers don't randomly change to crap every fourth time you open the book.

DDG is a mediocre search engine. A mediocre search engine is still much better than whatever Google's become.

Honestly, the answer is so often a little toy search like Marginalia or going straight to the website in question now, its frightening.

Are we both blocking Google ads and scrolling past the AI summary?

Their business practices are just the worst. But are the first 10 blue links they show you usually bad? (Like you know that one of those 10 should be the exact thing you want, so you decide to rely on another search engine instead, & the alternative search succeeds where Google failed)

Yes, I am. And these days Google has become about as bad as DDG. And not because DDG has become better.

Have read this comment before multiple times, even a year or two ago. Hence my “unreasonable” demand for screenshots if someone has the minutes to script it. - Hmm, really should be a live site to track over time... Can make that and Show [Three People On] HN!

(Google could give better results to those unloyal to them, as one example, so testing needed! We could be getting wildly different results or just have starkly different usage tendencies, there’s just no way I could disagree with so many of y’all on something this basic assuming no DDG astroturfing or anything unless we’re looking at things differently one way or another)

Waiting for your screenshots. Do the legwork yourself first.

And obviously there is no astroturfing here from DDG. That you could have seen from a tiny look at my profile. I have a pretty public persona on the internet.

Thanks, and important to say beyond not accusing them I was _definitely_ not accusing you!

DDG is unusable compared to Google for searches not in English.

My second screamed every night for two years. It was fun.

No, its going to give the CEO and some shareholders a few billion and destroy eBay. Because we can't have nice things.

I am so painfully sick of this.

eBay isn't doing itself any favors these days, the site seems to have issues on a regular basis and they're heavily promoting collectible/gambling garbage on the site. If anything eBay and GameStop seem perfect for each other.

There's tons of stuff I wanted or needed that was easiest to find on eBay. And I also sold old things there. Idk idc what the market for anime trading cards looks like.

Hadn't noticed gambling...they keep shoving car parts into everything I look for. And their insipid live auction wannabe QVC Network nonsense.

I was just thinking how nice it was to still get used stuff on eBay and now Mr. McMemeStock is going to kill it to extract a few billion for himself.

Yay.

"We shall trust 27 different sets of 3 to 10 guys in garages and ensure they never become large enough to blackmail a large percentage of the world's governments safe in the knowledge we can in fact arrest them for illegal bs" does have an appeal however.

I mean when I needed to look up something I used to just google it.

Now, with the advent of LLMs I've had to pull out my old textbooks from storage.

Yeah, no. No one needs your spyware.

"Good People" suddenly going all in on racist rants and hard-core misogyny is never going to stop being disturbing.

Some of them taught me how to behave!? Did they just not believe any of those things?

MAGA is a horrifying movement.

I suppose the question is, who is actually willing to believe Google is going to deal in Good Faith. Why would anyone ever even begin to think that?

I see a bull charging full-sprint at me, I'm not going to sit here and consider whether he's merely reacting to a loud noise or if he's actively trying to gore me to death. Incidentally limiting user freedom is indistinguishable from purposefully limiting user freedom.

Google has a fetish for controlling what I can install because they earn money by sitting on the brdige between me and the app developer. That is not a conspiracy theory like you try to portray it. That is basic economics.

Alex Jones is a bit much, yathink?

They're an amoral monopolistic megacorp that should have been broken up a year ago.

They are performing the ritual of maximalist offensive position -> half-hearted walk back to a worse status quo.

Is the problem they claim to want to solve real? Maybe. I haven't seen a convincing breakdown that doesn't lump a lot of unrelated fraud in the unvetted APK bucket.

That's beside the point though. No one should applaud this utterly predictable and disgusting behavior.

I don't accept it when Unity does it. I don't accept it when Hasbro does it. I won't accept it here either.
