You can also tie two knots but in the opposite directions:

Veritasium is owned by private equity.

It is, but luckily, private equities don't decide whether knots untie or not, so the video may still be helpful.

people don't want to support a state that has brutally occupied half of Europe
Sure. The comments above were about Russians though, not the state.

States consist of people. Russians are shareholders of Russia.

It would be true if Russia was democracy. It is not.

It's not a democracy because they neglect their shareholder duties. In other words, they are responsible for not making it a democracy.

This is a naive point of view. I can't blame you though, you probably live in a better part of the world.

The world also consists of people. Are you saying that people around me are better than the Russians? Sure, nice to have finally agree about something.

But that just proves the point you were trying to argue with.

No, you misread. I didn't say people around you are better; I said you probably live in a country with working government institutions and fair elections.

I don't feel you approach this discussion in good faith. I see no point in continuing.

It is silly to grant agency and moral responsibility exclusively to people living within democracies.

The Putin regime made an informal deal with the population "You stay out of politics and we're gonna stay out of your life". The people outsource political power to the regime.

This passive majority represents the bulk of the population, but not the whole of the population. There are two smaller groups. Ultra-patriots who criticize Putin for not doing more war, more suffering etc. And those who criticize the Putin for the war, although this group is not very vocal, but here I do agree with you that's it's difficult to publicly protest in an authoritarian regime.

It being RISC-V is awesome, but how does it make sense that it's S series when S series have been Xtensa cores? Why is it not C series?

S has never implied Xtensa, and C doesn't imply RISC-V. That's a widely held misunderstanding. S, C, P, etc. are product categories, not ISAs. S devices are high performance SoCs; large feature set, high frequency, not the lowest power or cost.

Just appending 1 to S3 is odd though. This MCU is step change for Espressif. S4 or something would make more sense.

Not saying you're wrong (appreciate the explanation) but S has been Xtensa and C is RISC-V; even if you don't imply, it's how the things have been. And given S2, S3, and C5 are all clocked at 240 MHz, the performance difference is kinda blur.

Espressif is all-in on RISC-V, expanding their portfolio of RISC-V devices where they previously had only XTensa: ESP32-S31 is the first big departure from the coincidental alignment of ISAs within their product structure and definitively ends further debate about what those letter designations mean.

BTW, S3 has an RISC-V core in addition to the XTensa cores. That's the part that's running in deep sleep.

In practice, most Espressif users barely know or care what ISA is in play: they have ESP-IDF and the Espressif libraries papering over the difference for nearly all purposes.

This is how Jeroen Domburg, Espressif Technical Marketing Manager, addressed this matter in a post on hackaday.io:

"We actually never intended the CPU architecture to be part of the name, as for 99.9% of all users, it doesn’t matter: you write your code in C or some other language, and the compiler plasters over any difference in ISA. Available peripherals, supported radio protocols and CPU power and memory are more important."

FWIW, Custom Attributes in .Net are kind of a pain in geneal, powerful but painful
Why? What's kind of painful in general about them? They are just pieces of static data. You can abuse them, e.g. have some obscure logic somewhere, but you can abuse many things just the same (ahem, Reflection, excuse me), so this factor doesn't make a distinction.

Probably why JS still doesnt really have them in practice.
Did you mean JS doesn't have TS decorators? Those are an entirely different beast.

Yep, a bummer. The devs don't even consider it a priority, too busy designing the feature:

Don't add random repositories from random tutorials? Come on, it's basic Internet hygiene. Entirely different thing.

I don't think going commercial has been that impactful. It sucks, it betrays the spirit of open source but whatever. A few examples:

- FluentAssertions had no moat, and it has been forked as AwesomeAssertions. Not sure what the author's play was here.

- Moq lost trust - we have NSubstitute

- AutoMapper and MediatR have been widely misused anyway

- Maybe MassTransit is a real bummer?

Switching to the forks/alternatives is still time and effort, often a lot of it.

Do you think Amodei is different?

The choice is not binary. I use DeepSeek (paid) for coding, and Qwen (free) for casual stuff from the browser chat UI.

I mean paying for deepseek is sending money to China, and any company in China is pretty much an extension of the CCP (or can become one at the snap of their fingers). I don't think this is much better or worse than the American AI companies.

Deepseek is much cheaper so that means you spend less on CCP than on Anthropic/OpenAI. Then there are third party providers as well.

If that's a concern, an easy alternative is using companies like novita or fireworks.ai to run open source chinese models. They are incredibly price competitive, have strict data retention policies, and in general are quite fast. Also, you don't get used to a model and suddenly get rug pulled when the provider decide to upgrade.

>...sending money to China...

Have you seen the trade deficit lately?

It's a testament to how much American companies have been fucking over their own reputations that people would view them as not "better or worse" than an extension of the CCP.

A decade ago, just that kind of comparison would've been pretty unthinkable.

I mean, Deepseek is open model, it can be rehosted in the US by anyone, there’s no royalty to china

Deepseek proper is the only provider offering Deepseek V4 Pro at such an insanely low price. All the other providers are like 5x.

If someone says they're using Deepseek, it's probably a safe bet that they're sending money to China. People choose an inferior model (Deepseek) because it's cheaper. Not many people are willing to use Deepseek but also pay the 5x price to have an American company run it for them.

I run Deepseek at home...only people getting money is my electricity company

you can use deepseek without giving china a cent if you want.

Wait, people actually pay for DeepSeek?

The $20/month Claude Code plan has incredibly low rate limits. $20/month of DeepSeek usage buys you a lot. Even more so in hobby projects where usage is bursty, not nicely distributed over a work week

Not binary, but the parent was talking about OpenAI vs Anthropic.

And honestly, DeepSeek is an excellent model.

I am having a better experience using DeepSeek than using Anthropic.

Hm, Altman vs China. Peculiar choice.

Amodei is convinced he's abraham prefiguring AI's christ. Very different than Altman's cold power-seeking. You can always trust someone who's selfish, since they'll always do whatever's in their benefit at all times.

Is that better? I'd much rather have someone trying to build a good product to sell to willing buyers at a fair price than some zealot who thinks he's going to usher in the second coming and end the world or something.

Compared to Scam Altman? Infinitely

No. He's worse. Much worse.

Why?

Why is Altman worse?

Dario is constantly fearmongering to generate press, gaslighting, and contradicting himself. Mythos is the most recent example of that. It was never too powerful to release, that was a lie to generate publicity and fear, and an excuse because they didn't have the compute to serve it. People were finding the same bugs and exploits using GPT5.4, GPT5.5, and lesser models. Now all of a sudden, they do have the compute, and now they're saying that Mythos is releasing in the coming weeks.

Anthropic is constantly caught up in ethical scandals too. They pump the web full of advertising bots. They steal peoples tokens, punish you for disabling telemetry, blacklist people they don't like. They had remote code execution vulns in their product for nearly a year and secretly buried that fact, no disclosures at all. Here are some of them https://clawd.rip

They're the least generous with open-source. The most closed off. The most likely to punish you for doing something they disagree with. Whenever OpenAI has issues they reset Codex's rate limits, they've done this every month that I can remember, and sometimes several weeks in a month. When's the last time Anthropic has done that for the many service issues they have had? Never. Not once.

Anthropic also never reply to peoples complaints or issues on GH issues, meanwhile the Codex team is very responsive and they actually care about customers user experience.

There's more, but you get the point. And yes, obviously not all of this is about Dario himself, but he drives the culture at the company.

>They're the least generous with open-source.

Yes I'm surprised most of the "anthropic stans" don't realize this.

It's not like OpenAI is a particular fan of open-source models either, but the way I see it to OpenAI it's a purely calculated pragmatic business decision. They won't release weights for any good models since it'd impact revenue, and they view other open models as competition. But otherwise they're not ideological about it. If there was some really good reason to, they would (and they have, gpt-oss probably as a fig leaf). Sure some of the characterizations of "sama" aren't particularly flattering, but at the same time I think the common thread that he views everything as "just ruthless business" is ultimately beneficial, since rational and pragmatic can be modeled and understood.

Anthropic's founding philosophy is built on the premise that only they should control AI because of its danger, only they can be the right stewards, and that open-source models are an existential risk. Oh and the fact that it's Chinese open-source models rather than western models that are "winning" must be keeping them up at night.

Only if LLMs will start to output object code, skipping text representation.

Perhaps it's not only CEOs who are delusional.
