Why did they leave the Seaport on the flood tide? Low tide was 5:37 PM EDT, so at 8:30 the current up the "river" (really a tidal strait) was just about at its fastest – if they'd lost way there four or more hours earlier or later they'd have been washed out into the harbor, probably safely but at any rate not under any bridges.
At 8:30 PM, even if it had gone well, they'd have been motoring against a 3 knot current that they could have had going their way instead.
I fear the reason they left then was so they could have their light show with the cadets on the yardarms just after sunset for greatest effect and audience... but then they should have picked another day.
They performed a very dangerous maneuver (as demonstrated, any engine failure guarantees crashing because there is no time to use the sails or the anchors) at the most unsuitable time.
A tugboat would have provided redundancy, waiting for a mild current in the opposite direction would have eliminated the risk.
> and TOTP, the obvious alternative solution, is still pretty sorry. you have to download an app to do it, it's not just a capability that a phone has by default
iOS Passwords can serve as your TOTP authenticator app.
My wife and I rented a midsize from Budget this weekend and got a Dodge Hornet R/T, which is their current sporty hybrid (a rebadged Alfa Romero Tonale). The media and climate controls were of course integrated into a big touchscreen and totally baffling to a simple software architect like me.
Fortunately its engine also chewed itself up, and they begrudgingly replaced it with a new low-spec Toyota RAV4 which had wonderfully ergonomic controls: a nice little touchscreen for CarPlay, and below it big knobs and and an LED screen for FAN and TEMP.
That's funny, that in 2010 the Commodity Futures Trading Commission specifically banned the insider trade that bankrupted the Duke Brothers at the end of Trading Places!
Here's a direct link to the testimony mentioned in the Wall Street Journal:
Even if the trading itself wasn't illegal, it had to be illegal to steal a government economic data report prior to its release, right? I mean, if you stole the monthly Non-Farm Payroll report and knew its contents ahead of its release, you could easily make millions of dollars. There is a reason it is released at a specific, scheduled time.
Ugh. Every few decades some new MTA honcho decides to switch to a schematic map, and it's either shot down before launch or lasts a few years before people realize you can't actually find your way to any real-world aboveground location on it unless you already know the nearest station. Maybe now that everyone can get transit directions on their phone it doesn't matter anymore and can just be a pretty decoration.
