The biggest pain point with macOS spaces is how it handles multiple windows of the same app. It drives me crazy. What is FlashSpace’s approach for solving this?

Could you explain what you mean? The app only allows assigning the whole app to a specific workspace. So you can't have one window of the same app in workspace A and another in workspace B. It's done this way because it's the most efficient way so far, but of course I understand that sometimes people may want to have multiple windows in different workspaces. I'm going to investigate a possibility to manage apps on a window-level basis. But macOS is the limitation here, if it's slow then my hands are tied.

Not OP, but the way I use macOS Spaces is to differentiate between work and private. I use Chrome for both, so I have some Chrome windows in my work space, and some in my private space. I do similar things for other apps like iTerm. It's an important feature. I once tried having two different browsers for work/private, but it was a chore to manage which browser I opened links in, so I gave up.

My biggest problem with Spaces is that it never remembers which space anything is in. When I reboot, everything is in the wrong space and has to be moved around.

I've been using Choosy.app for easily managing different browsers for work and personal (and testing), and it works great. You set it to your default browser, and then anytime something opens a browser it pops up a picker. Lots of global and per-site configuration options like browser profile selection, private windows, etc.

Does it also handle (let you pick) when opening a web link from another app?

Yes it does.

Right click the app icon > options > Assign To > This Desktop

Also noteworthy: assign to all desktops. I use this to keep my browser and messaging apps in all spaces.

That doesn't solve parent's (and my) problem.

I have collections of tabs in different windows and I assign those windows to different spaces. Every time I reboot Chrome all windows are assigned to whichever space is active when I launch Chrome.

I seem to recall that Chrome used to remember these assignments, so maybe it's not a macOS problem, but rather a Chrome problem...?

Btw. Zen Browser or Arc have great management of spaces in the browser. You can quickly switch between profiles without unloading them. So you can be even on a call using work space and switch to personal space. This way you don’t need to have separate windows per profile unless you need to see the content of both at the same time.

This is also how I use Chrome with spaces. I’d love someone to solve this problem.

Yes! Would love a solution to this.

I'm of course assigning apps to specific spaces. But my browser has to be in all spaces. MacOS still doesn't remember which window is where when the app restarts or the OS reboots.

I’ve been using the Orion Browser a lot recently. Each profile pretends to be its own app as far as I can tell. You get separated spaces for work and private and links open in the last used window. This might solve your issue of assigning multiple windows to different spaces.

same reason I would like this feature

Being able to have windows of the same app assigned to different spaces would be the big unlock for me to able to use your app. Not only do I do things like separate work and personal Chrome profiles (with a window open for each), frequently I'll have a Chrome window open for a specific project with tabs just for that project, so I can switch fully into that context when I want to work on something. I also frequently have sensitive tabs open that I group into a window so I don't risk oversharing something when on a Zoom call for example as I flip through my tabs.

Just echoing the others here. I get it in principle, but in practice I treat 2-3 separate windows of Firefox as their own "app".

Or vscode. If I was going to use this, I'd ideally want a space per client.

Another example: I use Screen Sharing to manage multiple Macs on my network. Each host gets a Screen Sharing window, and I maximize each window (whose virtual resolutions are forced to my physical monitor size) and then toggle between them and other workspaces using Spaces. I need the screen real estate so I would never have multiple host windows in the same workspace.

How did you handle stock splits?

A manual action where I multiply and divide all actions. It works, bit hardly. Won't do it again. A next time, I'll probably try to do a sell all old stocks for X/stock, and then buy all for X/splitamt/stock to handle this.

I think there's a python package for Ghostfolio, I assume we can automate this process

I found Portfolio Performance to be non-intuitive and very hard to use

That's true. UX is not the best. But it has a lot of features and works reasonably well once you got used to it.

Amazing product, well done! I see that you support some country-specific stuff. What's your plan for adding more countries? Clearly you adding them one by one, and tracking the various rules and regulations of each one, isn't scalable. Is there a way for the community to help adding (and updating) country-specific stuff? I'm personally interested in adding Israeli stuff and I'm willing to contribute my free time to that end.

My aim is to make the tax config UI increasingly flexible over time to allow modeling a wider variety of countries. And since you can export your data to JSON via the account menu (upper right) > Export, you and others in the community may be able to get a sense for what the data model looks like and propose tweaks/changes to the international tax templates.

Have you considered creating a github repo with a folder for each country, and then let the community add country-specific stuff in some simple yaml/json file? Each country can have it's own maintainer that verifies the data is correct and up to date. You'd then be able to source this data back into the app.

Thanks, I think this idea is worth looking into!

All the comments here are great, but how is it that in such an inspiring and intellectual community such as HN there are so few dreamers who actually have "big" goals (for some definition of "big")?

Keeping fit and learning some programming language are great goals, don't get me wrong, but in trying to think about my own goals for 2023 I can't help but thinking "really? Are these really my goals? Running 5k or whatever? When I'm on my deathbed, would I care that I achieved that goal?"

I wish I could come up with something more ambitious and memorable, and was hoping this thread would have some exciting ideas.

Then again, maybe dreamers prefer to remain silent and just work on their goals...

I can tell you that on my death bed I’ll be proud I successfully migrated to Scotland and assimilated there, if I manage that. Getting a good photo of a lynx and a snow leopard in Himalayas are definitely going to be unforgettable too. Though the latter ones are probably going to happen later than 2023. :)

If anything, I’m wondering if I’m not wishing for too much.

There’s plenty of “big goals” on ig, Twitter and tiktok. It also has a very grifter vibe but it’s hard to separate the 2.

I find this community to be one of the few places where people aren’t trying to constantly up sell themselves and that’s refreshing.

On my deathbed I’d probably wish I enjoyed the simple things that this world provided more - laughter, human companionship , raising a child.

Maybe try being the change you wish to see and post an ambitious, or memorable, goal to inspire the rest of us. :)

Obsidian, with a few community plugins, is amazing and is exactly what you're looking for. It's true that there's a learning curve, but spending a few hours to learn a tool that you will use for years is a pretty sweet deal.

Take a look at obsidian-tasks, templater, and the dataview plugins to understand how powerful (yet simple) this is.

I couldn’t agree more; Obsidian is just a fantastic tool for this. I’d like to add that the calendar plugin has been really helpful to quickly navigate between and create notes for each day or week. Keeping notes both on a daily basis and weekly basis has helped me to better plan and evaluate what I’ve been doing.

Anyone tried both and can compare? They seem quite similar at first glance...

One difference I noticed:

Shortcat: “Shortcat leverages the Accessibility API used in macOS, used by VoiceOver and other screen readers, to be able to expose UI elements, menus, apps, and windows as a list for you to search through and action.”

Superkey: “[The] Seek [feature] uses Optical Character Recognition (OCR) to find your text, and there are currently some limitations to this. It has a particularly difficult time with certain shades of blue text on black background, small text, and text close to lines.”

I just tried both. I like how Superkey works better (ie: it points to what you're about to click) but it couldn't find a a LOT of text on the screen making it not very useful. I'm not sure if there's an issue on my end or what.

I'm thinking about doing something similar to highlight where Shortcat's about to click cause I do agree that it could be better in that aspect. The amount of elements Shortcat will be able to pick up will be far greater than an OCR-based solution though

So I’ve been using Shortcat for a couple of days and I changed my mind. I think it’s superior to Superkey in almost every way. But I do like how Superkey points to the target. It’d be a great feature to add. Thanks for your great work!

60 books a year? That's insane :) For how long do you read each day?

I usually read for between 1 and 3 hours each day. Monday to Friday I'll normally get 30 minutes to read at lunchtime and then an hour in the evening. Saturday and Sunday I'll usually be able to get an additional hour in on top of that.

Looks interesting. We have quite a few statically generated Sphinx docs sites and what we're missing most is the ability to leave comments and ask questions about the documentation. Can this be integrated with any statically generated web page?

Yep! We use it for gatsby (statically generated docs) ourselves.

Simply Piano is a great app for learning piano. It might be a bit frustrating though if she already knows how to play.
