I wouldn't say they haven't had any repercussions. The whole 737 Max debacle cost them an estimated $20 billion (https://web.archive.org/web/20201221001329/https://www.cnn.c...).

But I do agree that overall there needs to be more repercussions. Unfortunately they are a "too big to fail" kind of company considering how critical they are to the aviation industry as a whole.

Small feedback regarding the website and the "Try Lanki for Free" heading. It makes it seem like we need pay after a trial period. But there is no pricing information I could find. Calling out the price would be helpful information

This is the first and only book of Le Guin that I have read. And I just couldn't grasp what was all the hype about this book. It could be because I was expecting a "typical" science-fiction book. Or maybe I was not mature enough when I read it. Maybe I should give it another shot now that I am older :).

I'm with you. I read it a year ago and found a lot of it dull as dishwater. And the ending very predictable. It was ok. I, like you, just don't understand the hype.

Yeah I've always found this one out of place when listed among other big classic sci fi books. It's tonally very different, slowly paced, focused on different concerns than is typical for the books it is usually grouped with. It's a great book in its own right but not a great introduction to her for people coming from or looking for sci fi.

Interesting. I've made it a point to try to make my way through the canonical sci fi greats over the years, and I'd put Left Hand of Darkness near the top. It's kind of because of that tonal difference: there's something about the way it's written (sort of anthropological / travelogue style) that makes me feel truly immersed in the culture and world being described, in a trance-like way, even though the book itself doesn't have particularly exciting events in it.

It may be that it hit me at a particular time in my life: I read it in my early teens and the way gender was expressed in the novel, the sort of tidal shift between masculine and feminine based on circumstance, really spoke to me at a time I was figuring all that out in my own psyche. I wonder if a lot of the gender exploration in the book may seem more trite and typical now.

I mean I think it's an incredible book, in exactly the ways most "great" sci fi is weak. But I've come across enough people bouncing off of it to put some thought into why and this is my most charitable take on why so many sci fi fans don't love it.

Dune 2 was totally worth it to watch in IMAX. Similarly I remember Interstellar being an amazing experience in IMAX. I wish more similar movies were made. That would make me go to the movies more frequently.

I agree. I have used HP, Dell and Lenovo laptops and all of them suck in terms of build quality. I use a Macbook for work and even though I hate macOS the build quality of the laptop is exceptional. There is obviously a huge price difference in Windows vs Mac laptops. I am willing to fork additional money to the Windows laptop companies if they can guarantee a well built laptop. But looking at their track record it doesn't seem worth it to pay thousands to get a crappy laptop anyway.

FYI: My Thinkpad has better build quality than any Macbook. My Dell was comparable.

The key thing about Dell and Lenovo is they have a byzantine set of laptop lines, from plastic craparific up to rather good. A top-of-the-line Thinkpad will set you back more than a Macbook, but will be better built too (and faster). Dell doesn't go quite as high, but still goes pretty high in quality.

I was in the same boat. I ran into similar discrepancies until I realized that I was not accounting for the number of days in the month correctly.

One option is to call the mortgage department and ask them to provide the split. When I asked the agent why I couldn't see it online, she mentioned their system is not setup to show this information. No idea why. Pretty frustrating.

+1 to Expanse, one of the best sci-fi shows in recent times. I also saw saw Reacher and felt that it was good.

Mass Effect trilogy. The first one was amazing, didn't like the second one as much and the third was not bad. What I liked the most is the engrossing story line and some really good dialogues from the supporting characters.

I never had a proper console when it first came out, but I recently played through all three (there are relatively recent remastered editions) at my wife's insistence. They are, indeed, quite good. I really enjoyed the storylines and loved chasing down every side mission I could.

I was pretty disappointed when I finally hit the end. I tried Andromeda, but it just lacked something and I got bored pretty quickly.

When you run the software in a VM of Windows, how do you provide access to the files that you want to edit? Do you have a shared volume between the host and the VM?

Yes, I just share the ./Downloads folder usually, sometimes the whole home folder, but if malware is truly a concern it’s safest to share a dedicated “Windows VM” folder for just those files.

Canada's population just hit 40m this week. Still small compared to the US, but it is no longer in the 30s :)

Curious where the growth is. I’m assuming in cities. And I’m assuming that “90% of Canadians live within 90 miles of the US border” more than ever. I want my assumptions to be incorrect. But I worry they are not.

Every online source that I can find says the population is still less than 39m.

>As of June 16, 2023, there are now 40 million Canadians! This is a historic milestone for Canada and certainly cause for celebration. It is also a great opportunity to look back on the country's growth over the years, and to reflect on the future.
