not with these hardware prices...

Second hand micro desktops are still cheap, at least for now.

Hardware that is considered e-waste (like a Core 2 Duo) makes a wonderful home server.

You can go much newer than that and get semi modern intel chips second hand. For something that runs 24/7, the power cost will exceed the savings from using long obsolete chips.

It’s basically the same thing that always happens when you choose a technology because it’s convenient rather than a great fit for your problem. Sooner or later, you’ll hit a wall. Just because you can cook a salmon in your dishwasher doesn’t mean you should.

your premise would've been right, if memory wouldn't skyrocketed like 400% in like 2 weeks.

wow amazing idea

I never understood the craze for "Advent of code". Already at this time of the year the last thing I want to do is code even more.

Well some people like to code and logic puzzles. And especially as it is in its raw form where you can forget all the noise you encounter while coding professionally with many hoops and responsibilities.

People like different things

and dislike different things

I mean people use the internet to find people who like similar things.

Why would you use a site called HackerNews if you are not a hacker? No idea.

I'm not a hacker I'm just news unfortunately

I code for fun, even in December.

I agree. Didn't these puzzles ruin interviewing for many years now. AI came along and they're still doing it. Some things will needlessly drag on before they die I guess

How do they ruin interviewing? The whole point of these puzzles is that they’re meant to be fun to solve, not a means to an end, but enjoyable for what they are.

Tell HR, they don't seem to get it

By the same token, AI came along and we all still have intelligence, needless, eh? I mean people reading and writing stuff has nothing to do with AI. I don't see how some people see everything as a zero-sum game.

All AI is doing is solving these puzzles, which proves they don't need any form of intelligence. You're wrong for associating AI with human intelligence. It will never happen. It might be faked once, like the moon landing, but that's it.

cool collection

Yeah, this is a the answer. Our brain only remembers novelty, our firsts years and even decades are plagued by it. But after you are already 5 or 10 years onto your "adult" life you basically do exactly the same each day. 80% of what we do in our daily life as adults is not memorable at all and get completely ignored by our long-term perception. In short, it feels like the time flies because you did only 2 or 3 memorable things in the whole year.

If you give me back 3 month of vacations in summer as when I was a kid, they will also feel long.

Even 3 weeks feels long now

I'd love to know how long a 3 week vacation feels! One day, maybe...

It’s easy if you get fired or quit! lol

While I agree that AI wont replace you, the analogy is BS. Magnus Carlsen is not replaced by a chess engine because he is not paid solely because of his raw skills. As any professional player of any massive sport, he is an entertainer first. He gets paid only because people want to watch him play.

scary AF
