If you are staff engineer or above, you are almost certainly making > 400k in total comp if you are in a high cost of living area.

Big part of that is due to the fact that if you are staff engineer or above, you've been at google for awhile, and google stock has done very well.

Almost all new grad offers vest 25% of equity in one year, then it is typically monthly, quarterly at most.

I'm sure how familiar you are with the categories, but really, criticism?

None of those are really suitable nor would her blog piece be competitive in a category that would only be potentially suitable. And in my opinion it certainly doesn't deserve a pulitzer in investigative journalism.

I think it would be cool to a new category for something like this that better captures the intent of the piece.

Why isn't Fowler's piece considered criticism?

Looking at the prize awardees for criticism, the award is for art criticism. So it wouldn't apply to Fowler's writing.
