Yeah, I read this wondering why the author encountered these issues and pushed on considering it a viable option. But like you, those are my priors

The ring doesn't have gps but its app requires location permission so it gets it from your phone. It continually asks me to turn on background sync, which would presumably upload my location regularly as well. I decline and only allow location when the app is open to sync.

Location is used for tracking distance/speed for certain activities and measuring VO2 max levels, and for finding a lost ring.

They already know where your phone is…

> A few neighbours who told us “nothing will change” went quiet. A few said “OK, but this was a fluke.”

Are they wrong? This is the equivalent of getting customer support from an otherwise unreachable tech company because your story went viral. It's the exception that proves the rule, not the status quo.

Undeniably it's a good reminder of the power of publicity for accountability, but at some point the news media won't be interested in airing another "neighbors taking action" human interest story.

> I ended up picking one up for <$5k

I'm struggling to put this in context. For comparison, what was your budget for refreshing the pc you had? Were the planned upgrades going to exceed $5k at current prices? Or is the situation that a pre-build machine with far better components was now only marginally more?

Or is it that pre-built gaming PCs have stopped being a joke? I had the experience building a bicycle: I was certain I was taking the frugal path sourcing each component individually and putting it together myself. At the end I was horrified to realize I spent far more than a new bike with superior components. It was pointed out that bicycle makers are buying by the pallet and will beat diy every time — so long as they're building something I want to buy.

> obsessed with [...] ending the system where China captures upside when sanctioned countries like Russia [...] sell oil.

> ... and I forget what's going on with Russia...

Well they relaxed sanctions on Russia in the hopes it would counteract the effects of their blunder, that's how it's going.

Do regular people that aren't terminally online use X? I don't know any.

Something like 20% of Americans use Twitter.

Case in point

not anymore. People are acting like they're leaving everything and moving to bluesky or fedi when in reality they already exist there and many other places and are simply leaving the braindead one

I think the argument is that NSA already knows exactly how valuable metadata is, while the average person significantly underestimates its importance without a concrete demonstration.

The same NSA that publicly states "We kill people over metadata"?

If that's the type of things they say publicly at conferences we can only imagine what a more sensitive comment would look like. How anyone can underestimate the importance of that is beyond me.

spread a false story in public news and monitor cell call graphs.

I went looking for a visualization tool to help get a sense of what this change means experientially. Found this:

What size?! Any leads on a matching bolt?

2"! I found a matching reference to it but this is not where I bought it (and also sold for waaay more than I paid, which was something like $130 IIRC) https://www.ebay.com/itm/136814704435. The pictures and details in all of the listings are often very mismatched (there are several variations of different lengths and sizes) but that's the model number of the one I ordered.

Here's a funny picture comparing it to a 2 liter https://i.imgur.com/UIzpDMO.jpeg. As far as the matching bolt... I never did find one to order in time so I gave that as a challenge to figure out before next year! So far he has been using it as a doorstop, mostly to cause people to do a double take when they walk through.

If anyone knows of a good pair of comically large pliers that actually function well enough please let me know.
