Big bang theory really a term describing the moment the universe started and not the evolution and how things evolved with time which have more questions than answer. The standard model of cosmology is the most accepted theory about universe. But you can't have knowledge about anything before the singularity. Actually we don't even know for sure what happens in the seconds after that because we need a much more powerful colliders than what we have now to produce the same conditions. But there are many theories about what could have happened.
Add to it we need much more reliable ways to detect super weak neutrinos. If we had that ability we could see into the first seconds of the universe whereas the universe was dark to light for hundreds of thousands of years.
I mean, there is at the very least a theory that at very small levels, the quantum effects take over and we’re actually looking at a cyclic bang/crunch model. It’s literally discussed in A Brief History of Time. But this is more of a refinement.
Oxygen is the name of the element. The usage of oxygen to describe the molecule that does have bonding of two oxygen atoms is the source of confusion not the reverse.
It depends on why you are trying to learn Arabic. If the goal is to understand quran then standard arabic is going to be your goal. If you want to be able to read arabic text (documents) then it is using standard arabic. If you want to go to arab country except Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia and talk in a way that people will understand you then learn Egyptian dialect. It is the de facto standard dialect due to the media and the fact that about one from each Arab speaker is Egyptian. Then to understand other dialects you will get it by living or engaging with their speakers a little bit while they would be happy to talk sometimes in standard Arabic or Egyptian dialect themselves.
Also Egyptian Arabic tends to be the easiest dialect to learn for a beginner. It makes pronunciation much easier than i.e Iraqi dialect.
If the reason someone wanted to learn Arabic was because they thought they could learn one language to do all of those things, it's clear why they might just drop the idea when they learn they can't.
While I understand that people have their problems with universities tuition and loans ..etc. The problem is here is that funding for basic and applied science on all front is being cut. It does provide a lot of jobs and supports a lot of universities operations too. Universities build labs which does provide infrastructure (buildings and other facilities) and NSF, NIH and DOE provide funds to use these facilities to pursue research. So these agencies have dependency on universities to provide these research facilities and manage hiring and compliance with rules.
Now there are many problems with current system which need to be addressed. But you don't solve the cancer in the cells by killing cells and thus killing patient. But you use targeted approach to the problem. This needs some modifications to the rules and deep changes in laws that will require further study and discussion. This is of course not going to happen currently.
Now some people argue that the budget is a problem and debt and deficit is more important. But again lets talk data. The whole NSF and NIH budget is less than $60B dollars in 2024 which amounts to a little bit less than 1% of the total budget. If you compare it with other Items in the budget percentage wise you will get (DoD - 7.5%), (Medicare - 6.7%), (Social Security - 4.6%), (Medicaid - 10%),(National Debt Interest - 15%). So even cutting it all will not achieve any significant improvement while create a lot of problems. There are a significant part of economy and jobs are supported by these money. The return on investment is positive in most cases and you are leading in innovation and most of scientific frontier. One can argue that these two items are very cheap to maintain you dominance than another couple of air craft carriers (and their operation costs).
If you tried and achieved any reduction in the big items in the federal budget you will be saving something near the total budget of NIH and NSF. But again for some reason a lot of focus on these programs while less focus on big items for some reason.
> Why do people get upset about the limitations on Apple, yet happily accept that their Nintendo system will not play whatever they want to install, nor any other console system
Many people can get upset and complain about many things at the same time. For me I have a smartphone and it is essential to have one for everyday life now. Gaming devices are not playing the same role in people's life.
But in principle I would agree that people should advocate for more control over all their devices.
Part of that is that before it was more of personal curation list. Now it is basically collection of curated list of individuals contributing to an awesome list. To be honest it serve the role of having a place where you explore new things. The most famous one for me is awesome selfhosted, I visit it every couple of month to see the new development in this area because it is interesting to me.
You can pay customary $10 per year to bitwarden to support and still selfhost valultwarden. Some people want to have control and don't want to have to deal with VC money getting in the way (1password was a hard learnt lesson). Also vaultwarden seems lot cleaner and easier to install and manage than official bitwarden server. And you still rely on their clients.
The comment said specifically "Major" accidents within specific time frame. I don't see anything in your link contradicting them. The claim was not that there were not any accidents.
Ok, then let's define it. There is a world of difference between Part 121, Part 135, and Part 91 operations. Almost no one in America will ever be on a 135 or 91 flight. If we limit ourselves to 121, which is what we're actually talking about when we talk about air travel, then you've got Southwest 1380, and before that you have to go all the way back to Colgan.
