I'd love to know! Too bad this website only gives a small selection of what those items are, despite the entire lists already being published elsewhere! Very useful, thanks Hacker News!

developers will do anything but actually recreate visual basic

https://github.com/eulerto/wal2json has existed for this purpose for many years, just transform the incoming records into JSON and parse with literally any standard tool that reads the format. There's a literal postgres extension for this.

why is every social media network now just "post something with varying levels of correctness because it farms engagement"

it's so exhausting needing to just read comments to get the actual, real truth

None of this is incorrect. Why are people so disrespectful about others doing the work?

Do you realize that the linked Wikipedia post agrees with the article? It lists Ultima Online as one of two likely sources for the term "sharding."

Yup, I realize that the post could have originated from that section of the wikipedia article; or they are relying upon common sources.

"you mean to tell me AI can't just replace a human?"

Whisper transcription is extremely good. For most real-time transcription tasks I do think it performs as well or better than the average human at this point. In this case it sounds like the task is more active and involves actually thinking and talking to the other party, which makes it much harder. But for simply transcribing phone calls, the state of the art is very very good.

720x480 is not 720p, that's 480p (assuming progressive scan and not interlaced).

Good catch, that's a mistake that's now been corrected, it's definitely 480p. The Github page (https://github.com/a2fpga/a2fpga_core) had it correctly.

ah, you can get bongs made in the USA with similar strength.

mmm, $20 for the privilege of re-binding your mouse buttons! I sure do love the Apple software community!

(there are _so_ many ways to do this on Windows for free.)

Problem solved: https://linearmouse.app/

Approximately the same features as SteerMouse but free. I've voluntarily donated to the dev, though.

This complaint was more widespread before the vast majority of Mac users were MacBook users. Today it’s a niche within a niche. I personally didn’t mind the expense even when it was a much less niche use case.

There are many ways to do it free on a Mac, too, including vendor-provided software.

SteerMouse fills a niche, it is not a requirement. Akin to, say, HydraMouse on Windows.

Yea but they're making money on simple things and you're not.

OVH and Hetzner have offerings at that price range. you can use a tool like serverhunter.com to find all sorts of economically-priced servers.

Yep, I'm renting two servers from Hetzner; have one in Germany and another in Finland. Both cheap (€40/month) and over the few years I've been using their services, I have nothing to complain about.

Does OVH asks for passport verification too, like Hetzner?

Why would they ask for a passport? Many people don't even have one.

The worst part is they ask for it after you have enter your credit card details. Maybe they have policies per geographic region for this.

Curious what your AI is telling you now that a major US port is out of commission.
