One type? Damn near all of them! +1 nonetheless

edit: We'll get to demonstrate more value cleaning up the mess this creates! SWE/SRE is controlled opposition, change my mind /s

IIUC, the chemistry with a typical UPS battery would be much more favorable for constant power than a laptop... with probably-questionable management software to boot

I say this while truly enjoying my F13; nothing against them

The latest firmware update included changes to how the battery management handles long-term constant power. Too soon to say how much it helps, but it at least is a thing they are addressing.

Working in Big Tech: my colleagues aren't

This can be taken both with admiration and distaste. I'll either be rewarded with a lesson or a knife

DNF has a similar mechanism, I appreciate it when poorly-written third party package manifests try to remove/deprecate more than they should

Remember War Games and 'winning'. This, like nearly everything, is a status game. Do you want to play?

Having been the 'go-to' person other posters mention... I suggest considerable hesitation. Inch, mile.

I’ve seen the “go-to” person get trapped in a local maximum, because even though they get opportunities, they are held to a higher standard. It’s a recipe for burnout if you don’t know what you’re doing, and can keep you from building deep expertise, since you’re constantly bouncing from fire to fire.

Absolutely! Eventually, completely losing perspective. I know from experience! Once reaching what should be a terminal position... I spent roughly 7 years chasing these fires before finding something else. My desirable skills were weakened while bad habits were developed.

After all, guess what? The other place wants a sucker too. "Career limiting" doesn't sound so bad to me, I've only seen it demand more. Much Sisyphean, wow.

Yep; my own management chain even suggested it! "You're good, it won't be enforced." Implying something. Not sure what.

Knowing this proposition had the longevity of a housefly, I found remote-friendly work. In writing.

Let users choose, don't require it. They've already expressed a preference... it might change depending on your style.

Tbh, the preference may work for one set of things but not for the other. It should be a per-app per-site setting with a system default. But not in-the-site, obviously.

This is not a realistic change though, cause systems and browsers vendors are absolutely deaf to this and don’t let users choose. In contrast to Dark Reader extension, which does the thing for all sites, light and dark.

I don't think I phrased this well, I agree. Things should follow what the system reports, but still permit switching should things not be suitable for whatever reason

Anything made because "we didn't have time"... when an educated participant wouldn't have entertained any of this to begin with

When the bugs near flaws... I'll burn it, you, and myself down

> Their love for self-hosting might just lead to a homelab that outgrows their house.

Real

My guess: they're somewhat uniquely positioned for the data. With 'the feeds' they're closer to a source/can withstand more. They plan to monetize another way

I'm imagining four rooms of candlelight and collective reading of publications. "War room" is executive-speak for "Important/Urgent Panic" or "rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic"

Four war rooms to read a document; so Meta
