If you check news regarding Egypt, there have been several news sites and publications not accessible from the country.
The best thing they could do beyond EliRivers comment is, if the circumstances for, have an open conversation about what the company can improve. And then say let's keep in touch if the new job doesn't work for you maybe we can talk.
Now you might think hey.. that is an exit interview. But exit interviews are formal form filling exercised done by a HR person that may or may not have a positive effect and there is not much incentive to be brutally honest. In fact the opposite.
It was probably somewhere in the terms. Not ideal, but at the same time - the product IS a social network for the neighborhood, so the user gets value from having their neighbors on. And they expect to have their neighbors on.
I'd prefer a checkbox with one line of text saying they would use my name though.
Why did you decide to make this a site rather than a desktop app?
This is a private database as I see it, so there is no need for it to be online. And keeping it offline would be good for privacy, and would make it easy for anyone to download and install, rather than the more complex install needed for a web application (or letting someone else host and sacrificing privacy).
Because I just know web technologies. Also, because having a web app will allow me to create an API, which will allow to use a mobile app for this, which totally makes sense.
If you care about the privacy, you can also host this yourself :-D
