Did they choose not to use open source software because it was socialist?

So I'm wondering - should they keep this a summer project or just take a leave of absence from school and give this project their full attention?

100k is some serious seed money.

Leave of absence I'd say. 3months may be enough to build the basic infrastructure before turning it over to the open source community, but the odds of Diaspora succeeding in the long run will be significantly better if its guided by the people who created and live it as long as possible. Thinking of Linux as the model.

I say full attention. When will they get an opportunity like this again?

The dangerous thing about these tests is that they only show if you have a marker for a particular diseases/affliction . This doesn't mean that you'll get the disease - we're still amateurs at this technology and I don't know if I want to live my life perpetually fearful of a disease that I have a marker for, but no relevant data on what the chance that I'll actually get that disease.

I guess it depends on what kind of person you are. I'm pretty comfortable with applying probability to my daily life, so it wouldn't bother me at all.

I think you have to take these results with a grain of salt. Its better to know ahead of time so you can begin to take steps to ensure that you dont have problems in the future. Genetic predispositions are only a factor, environment and other epigenetic factors also play a major role in determing your phenotype.

Agreed, but it's important that companies like 23andme don't market these tools as a complete tool for knowing what you'll get in the future, since there's still plenty more research to be done on many of these markers (and they're definitely not all inclusive of the diseases we face).

I'm at UCLA now, and over the last few weeks I've seen front page classifieds for DB hiring front end and backend devs. They're definitely paid hourly (I think I saw 14/hour, but I may be wrong)

Ha, I actually went out to grab a paper because I recalled seeing this too. Those ads were for Student Media which I guess Daily Bruin is a part of. It advertised "pay competitive with any on campus."

As for other other jobs on campus, I saw that the Volunteer Center was hiring "Wordpress programmers" for $19/hr a couple months ago.

Now I wish I had paid more attention in PIC 40A this quarter... By the way, UCLA HNers need to do a meet up

I've only identified about 4 UCLA HNers, one of which tried to do an LA meetup without much success http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=804191

I'm a fourth year bioengineering major @ UCLA looking to switch fields into something more hacker - User exp. design or simply coding. Have done some coursework in C++/run a website w/ drupal @ www.bruinco.com. Would love to work an internship in Bay Area or LA.

Maybe I should have been more forward thinking in the terminology :D. Not sure I want to go into speaking about the cloud and moving all our services away from local processing. : )

I'd be willing to put you up in LA when I'm down there for school (late September). I can also introduce you to someone in San Francisco who is a UIUC alum and is running a web dev business (I think there's a few other UIUC guys there too working with him). E-mail in my profile.
