> It's not the developer's convenience. It's the readers.

The marketing folks and copywriters are being paid to post, and they have a manager and boss to report to - which can fire them.

I guess it's very much about convenience and ease of use to people writing the posts

> a form handler for static websites available under the AGP

Marketing and copywriting people don't know any of those licenses. And I guess not ironically, first search result for me for AGPL was "Understanding the AGPL: The Most Misunderstood License". So this already makes it kind of a no-go. If I'm in a rush to add a form, I need a simple answer: can I use for business purposes and do I have to pay for it?

> and costs literally nothing to host

Costs nothing to host, but then you need to train every user, which demands time, will make productivity go down every time there's a new user. VS wordpress, which any copywriter or marketer already knows how to write on, or will learn in just a few minutes because creating a post there and clicking 'publish' is easy

> Costs nothing to host, but then you need to train every user, which demands time

It's more than that - imagine that marketers want a contact form on such static site, well nice, you can add that easily. But now there is a lot of spam coming through, okay that can be dealt with. Now they want to have multiple, editable forms. And Hubspot integration, and analytics integration, and now one of forms needs to be 2-step, another needs to have dynamic part shown/hidden based on conditions. etc etc All of that is already solved issue in the Wordpress world - one can pick proven and tested solutions from multiple vendors and deliver results.

And that is ONE component, form - sure it can be replaced with some 3rd party embedded widget but that never comes without hidden costs/annoyances. There are multiple components similar to used "form" example

> editors still want WP, because this or that plugin

So you are saying that you are still missing functionality

Nope, I'm saying they don't need this functionality.

But the editors want. So... I guess you are out of touch with your own clients. Either you actually don't know their needs, or you didn't take the time to sit with them to explain why they shouldn't have that

We don't have enough time to convince them against a whole ecosystem built around false assumptions. But we don't have to either, since we're in position to force them to change their methods. And the reason why we're in this position is because they've fucked up their WP install in the first place.

The mass of readers don't have the same requirements as HackerNews commenters. Proof is that content on wordpress still gets viewed and apparently, leads to sales.

> Many sites have dropped comments altogether

And many still have. I think most wordpress.com and blogger blogs have comments on

This is what drove me away from static sites. It's actually more work because you have to be the one to do all the stuff.

Sure, there are a few options for hosting and generating the build, but when I tried, they were not that good, or had some issues, etc... Meanwhile, wordpress.com never disappointed, and has an app for iOS and Android that you can use to update stuff whenever you are - as long as you have internet, of course.

That's why nowadays I use Obsidian Publish. Of course, I could use Quartz or some other alternative for building a site from my obsidian vault but... none will just work out of the box, from your phone

> I suspect that being a dongle is part of the appeal of Chromecast for many people.

Exactly. Also: I just want to watch stuff. I don't want AI or smart-home features.

My main reason to use this would be to maybe have an easier time adding a login when I'm on mobile - hopefully Apple would make it as easy as with bitwarden's desktop browser extension where you can just click 'save' or 'update' after logging in

My main reason not to use it is because I guess not going to work as well with firefox desktop?

Obsidian Sync costs money to sync your files between devices. Obsidian Publish also costs money on top of that to publish your notes.

Obsidian has a community plugin called "Remotely Save" that lets you sync your vault via Webdav, S3 (compatible), Dropbox, or OneDrive. It works on all my devices and synchronises my data just fine. You could also use something like Syncthing or any other third party solution that syncs your Yaml directories.

I’ve been using icloud to store my vault and have found it to be great to sync with laptop, phone, and tablet (obviously they’re Apple devices as iCloud isn’t supported on anything else).

It’s been really solid. When I used an android phone I had a lot more difficulty. While syncthing is reliable on android and macbook, iphone and ipad don’t work nearly as well.

There's iCloud for Windows. https://support.apple.com/en-us/103232

Obsidian runs on local Markdown files so there are many free options you can use for syncing and publishing notes.
