-33C (-40C with windchill), no daylight (they wore night vis gear), refuelled with running engines in Antarctica, 7h+ return flight, in a 60-year old Lockheed C-130H Hercules airplane. More details here: https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/national/520723/hercules-complete...

Take out the oxygen and the conditions are almost the same as a lunar lava tube. Trailblazing work truly.

And, per the article, New Zealand's one operational Herc (or operational and available for this mission?) with the Australian air force on standby just in case. Wow

The c-130 is a truly amazing plane

Nice to see the worlds tech gets better and better.

Compare it to Jerri Nielsen breast cancer in 1998, I think they had to open the doors early since they thought they would freeze over before the drop site -

Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station - 90°S 0°E - Might have been harder - https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=Amundsen%...

This incident is McMurdo Station - https://geohack.toolforge.org/geohack.php?pagename=McMurdo_S...
