Please don't put checkmarks in checkboxes before I checked them (grumpy.website)

Wonder how many times you see auto checked checkboxes that aren't part of some dark pattern or another? Feels almost non existent outside of user dashboards and pre saved setting pages.

Preference panes in nearly any application do this. Sensible defaults, with the option to change them.

Right. The alternative is an unchecked box with a negated label ("Don't do sensible default"), which is harder to parse.

DoorDash does this. When I make an order the “Resume DashPass” option is checked. If I’m not paying attention/in a hurry and forget to uncheck it, I’m back to paying them $10 a month.

There is unintentional poor design and then there are intentional dark patterns. That sounds like the latter.

While you are at it, stop this "maybe later" nonsense.

Yeah, I’m looking at you Signal for iOS. Why would a service that is so concerned about privacy keep prompting me to allow access to (import) my contacts and not provide any way to say ‘no’ other than clicking ‘Not now’. It’s like they’re hoping I’ll eventually accidentally pick the wrong button.
