Voting this up because I see that once again, HN users are voting up the TechCrunch writeup of this news instead of the source of the news.
Tired of seeing TC on the front page of HN every time there's an acquisition. They don't add much to the story, and what they do add is questionable. It's getting old.
I have never heard of Glancee before today. Going to their announcement page tells me nothing about what exactly did, or do now, except a generic blurb about bringing people together.
The TechCrunch article, on the other hand, gives me information about exactly what these guys used to do, and who the remaining competitors are, which is a pretty big deal.
I was writing a virtually identical response when you posted yours. I don't see a TechCrunch article on the front page, but I'd rather have read it than been linked to Glancee.com itself. Visiting that site tells me nothing more than the headline alone did.
I didn't actually think the Glancee post was better or more informative. My gripe is that when I read HN I want to read the original source, not the remix. It's not just TC either-- though I singled them out-- it's also Mashable and PandoDaily. These sites regurgitate the acquihire and acquisition news in order to sell ads.
Well, the point of every news organization is to sell ads. That may or may not disgust you, but doesn't invalidate that some news organizations will add value.
To concur with Yuri, I clicked on the article here hoping to figure out what Glancee is, since I'd also never heard of them. Their post tells me nothing, except that they're going to Facebook, and other positive rhetoric.
99 times out of 100, I'd probably be in line to rally behind you to get the original article up above the rehashed news article, but in this particular case, TC added value, to the degree that the original story was no longer useless, and deserves to be the higher rated article.
I'd rather read the TC story as well! Keep in mind that the glancee.com site will likely disappear within a few months, but the techcrunch article is here to stay. I bookmark a lot of things i find on HN and I'd rather not have those links disappear later!

I absolutely hate reading TechCrunch. This is how much I hate reading TechCrunch: I actually read Hacker News through my own customized filter site (http://hacker-newspaper.gilesb.com/), and one of the biggest benefits is that I hard-coded a TechCrunch ban (along with several other sites I don't ever want to read).
However, I have to say, this logic is completely sound. I hit this Glancee blog link and was left wondering A) what on earth these people even do and B) why people on HN are talking about it in the first place. For once, I wish I'd seen the TechCrunch link!
I downloaded the press kit to see what they did. They looked to be a "local social network". It looks like if another member was in walking distance from you it would show their profile and you could chat. Seems kind of interesting and right up Facebook's alley.
