Fossil Is Quitting Smartwatches (slashdot.org)

Hello Fossil,

I agree --- smart watches are kinda dumb when your phone is only inches away and does everything the watch can do only better.

Less dumb would be a memory watch. Take any old watch, add a gigabyte of "reliable" flash storage to it and strap it to your wrist for essential backups.

Think about it. The data is as safe as you are.

If something goes bump in the night, all you have to worry about is your own personal safety. And even if you should die in a horrible accident, the data is likely to be recovered along with your body.

The only way authorities will invest time and effort recovering a backup disk is if it strapped to a body.

I make my own version of this by modifying the wristband of a cheap Chinese watch with a 3D printed holder for a micro-SD card. The watch itself is really just a diversion (my phone has the time too) to prevent people from questioning why it is strapped to my wrist.

I'm sure you could easily make a much nicer version of this that people would pay good money for.

Data never goes out of style.
