The actual report was of a reorg in a 30k person unit. That's substantially different from 30k jobs being cut, or 30k people being laid off.


I'm not sure this is credible. It stretches belief that Google would even have thirty thousand people in it's ad sales unit. That would be nearly 20% of alphabet employees if true. After laying that many people off there presumably wouldn't be anyone left at all in ad sales. This would seem odd for a company which makes it's money selling ads.


The article mentions that all they have said is that they will restructure a division that happens to be 30k people. In the worst case that would be 30k people laid off, so I guess technically the headline is not a lie? Pretty close to one though.


Another source is mentioning 300k layoffs.

Do they even have 300k employees? Wikipedia says they have just 140k 2021.
