Calling all machine learning experts
on March 16, 2012 | hide
We're a YCombinator-backed startup bringing machine to the masses, and we're looking for an engineer with ML expertise to join our cause!

We're a small team of of ex-Google and ex-Zillow engineers who previously worked on speech recognition, ads targeting, sentiment analysis, and more. In our past jobs, we’ve learned that the challenge is no longer storing the data, but sifting through it to discover interesting patterns, correlations, trends, and anomalies.

Our product is an API paired with elegant visualization tools that lets domain experts apply large-scale learning to their data. The first application of our technology is to battle fraud online. Last year, there was $4B in credit card fraud, 70% of it from organized crime, and it literally kills companies (see http://techcrunch.com/2011/11/10/brandstack-heads-for-the-deadpool-blames-credit-card-fraud/). Our system uses a combination of supervised classification algorithms, anomaly detection, and good ol'-fashioned feature engineering to ferret out the bad guys, all running on top of open-source tools like Hadoop, HDFS, MongoDB, Vowpal Wabbit, and d3.js.

We're fresh out of this summer's YCombinator batch, backed by top angel investors, and have huge plans beyond fraud. Our team includes two former CTOs, the tech lead of Android voice input, and the tech lead of Google's A/B test analysis framework. We like to laugh, push each other, and keep things fresh by doing fun events with other companies in the broader San Francisco startup community.

As the fifth engineer, you'd become a pillar of the team. You should:

- thrive on responsibility and freedom

- be a rock-solid hacker

- have prior experience with machine learning, data mining, or related applications (e.g., machine translation, computer vision, search ranking)

- M.S., PhD, or equivalent experience preferred, but we're flexible

So if you think P(you, us) > P(you)P(us), then shoot a resume over to: principal.components.wanted@gmail.com .

We're located in San Francisco, CA, a short walk from the Embarcadero BART/Muni stop.
