A magic bullet, here, is simply any matter of public policy which a majority of Americans want, but which their elected legislators will not enact. There are so many of these majoritarian "magic bullets" (drug legalization, health care, etc, etc) that one might question the extent to which the U.S. is actually a representative democracy.

That, to me, is the more interesting story. Why is it that no one has simply started a "majoritarian" third party that simply adopts a raft of these never-to-be-enacted policies that people actually want? (There are probably at least 50 reasons why not).


I think the French approach of don’t ask, don’t tell, on race, religion, and infidelity is interesting. I wonder why trump didn’t use it before, maybe in 2024… not sure if I want French approach to the rest of the economy though. Let’s see what the Supreme Court does.
