Happened on my old but still useful Garmin eTrex devices. They thought it was November 2002. Luckily Garmin had a firmware update for these 20 year old gadgets. I don't know if the firmware update merely kicked the problem into the future, i.e. they'll miss another rollover come 2038 or so, or whether they actually understand the newer protocol that fixes the issue now.


How do banks keep time synced? It'd be an important input to some account balance calculations, but do they just outsource to NTP servers?
