I don't understand why they had the asterisk with text at the bottom of the article. Was that supposed to be unsettling? Some kind of trying to spare the reader of something that was not even that bad? You see way, way worse on television every day. Or is the article just some kind of signaling that the author is woke or whatever? That has to be the lamest thing I've ever read.

You mean the comment about moving to the bottom the torture description? I agree weird, but also get it if someone doesn't want to hear "knowing your upper-body blood circulation has been stopped, and feeling the evergrowing pain and the ever-closing-in of claustrophobia as the man standing on your back gives your head one last shove down with his heel and you start to gasp and vomit"

Like I get that its not bad, but I guess I get the idea that not every reader wants to visualize that on like, idk, a Sunday morning while reading something.

What makes it lame to you?

Like I said, way, way, way worse stuff appears on TV and print every day. [See "X" at end of post, removed description of stuff in case it is your preference to skip reading it] It just really strikes a false note to me, on the author's intent. It seems that they were just aching to show how 2021 they are. [See "XX" at end of post, removed description of stuff in case it is your preference to skip reading it] [See "XXX" at end of post, removed description of stuff in case it is your preference to skip reading it] [See "XXXX" at end of post, removed description of stuff in case it is your preference to skip reading it]

.

"X" This is one of the absolute lamest things to put asterisk on. (better put this asterisk on just in case there are some people reading this who take offense at the thought of calling someone else lame.)

"XX" What miserableness.

"XXX" I like boobs.

"XXXX" Sometimes I pick my nose.

.

(I had to use "X" instead of asterisks because the editor interprets asterisks as italics and I don't want to bother to guess how to counter that with a slash or whatever)

I believe this has been common in journalism shortly after war. Whilst it may not be bad for you as an onlooker, I can imagine someone to whom this has actually happened, who perhaps is still suffering from ptsd, may not want to be graphically reminded, but does still want to read the article.
