Chinese Villages, Security Forces Revealed Inside Bhutan's Borders (foreignpolicy.com)

The borders in the area (the whole of the South West of China and especially Tibet) are historically not well defined, or defined at all. This has been compounded by the British land grab in the 19th and early 20th century and the rather chaotic and weak Chinese government of the time.

Virtually all the borders disputes from Arunachal Pradesh to Pakistan stem from that. The South China Sea disputes follow a similar pattern.

These are not simple issues, border disputes rarely are. They may be getting "hotter" now because after two centuries of downward spiral China is able to assert itself (and it has learned the game).
