Dont forget Ibrahim Muteferrika, another (hungarian) ottoman cartograph. Also widely credited with inventing the arabic wordpress.

Curiously, he was a christian priest of some kind (its not known which denomination he belonged to?), and he wrote a book called Risâle-i Islâmiyye where he quotes biblical verses in latin, transliterated to ottoman script, mentioning "Ahmedus" (Ahmad, the alternative name for the islamic prophet, with a latin suffix -us). I read the manuscript but did not have the skills to translate the ottoman-latin to something I could understand.

I uploaded the manuscript I found in Istanbul to Picasa, but unfortunately those files seem to have gone lost when they shut down.

Were you there as part of some academic trip? Curious how they let you get hold of the manuscript to upload to Picasa.

Im a total nobody, really. Never sat foot on a real university. I heard about the manuscript, saw it was in a library in istanbul, travelled there, went to the library, searched it up on their computer, and they gave me the manuscript on a CD for free.

This site doesnt even come close to doing justice to the art in these images. Compare the last image presented, Istanbul,

The Public Domain review links through to their source, Wikipedia commons, which has high Res versions e.g.

In the fourth painting of the list you can see that he stylized three wolves in the mountain's features and in the fourth from the last (Istanbul) there appears to be a bear in the looking down at the deer grazing. Very nice work.

I just looked him up and it turns out he was also a soldier and a master bladesmith and he wrote a book on the usage of various weapons and infantry and cavalry fighting techniques.

interesting
