The OP addresses the "political correctness" criticism later in the thread: https://twitter.com/jenniferdaniel/status/100450906711974297...

"...Just want to clarify that the goal of salad emoji redesign was to create an image more faithful to unicode's description. 'A bowl of healthy salad, containing lettuce, tomato, and other salad items such as cucumber.'"

I didn't realize that there were official long descriptions for these characters!

This is old. I still think it's funny that it's more inclusive by including _fewer_ things and making the emoji duller. But whatevs. Maybe next time make it a Jell-O salad emoji.

Jello isn't vegan, is it?

Jell-O the brand, no, but there are plant-based gelatin substitutes. The neat thing is you cannot, from an emoji, make out if it's one or the other, so it would make everyone happy as they would see what they wanna see in it.

The way it usually seems to work is that people assume the worst case scenario even when there's no information to support that. So people would get mad about the Jello.

Publicizing having removed an egg from a salad emoji makes sense in the corporate definition of "inclusiveness".

It's a cute, out-of-touch PR move.
