Speak your mind, that's what matters.

Unfortunately, HN has built-in echo-chamber amplifying mechanisms. Apart from karma itself, flagging, graying out and hiding unpopular posts, there is an interesting feature: if your comment gets downvoted, your ability to post gets limited (to one entry a day), no matter what your total karma is. This policy encourages writing comments and submissions that conform to the mindset of majority rather than interesting/novel things, alternative approaches etc. You're encouraged to think just like everyone else, and you will be rewarded with the ability to communicate with a crowd of people forced to express themselves in the same way, often without even noticing that.
