They would have made more money by tweeting the ETF got rejected. My guess is this was a mistake by an intern or something like that.

They sure managed to regain control of the allegedly "hacked" account in short order.

Even Twitter/X might not want to be responsible for this one, and answer the phone.

We have a similar situation in Argentina, with the exchange rate being around $350 pesos but the "black market" rate around $1,000.

The only way to get dollars at the official rate is to import goods from abroad, so you can pay the central back in pesos and they settle the invoice with dollars.

Of course, you can only do this if you have connections, otherwise you will be waiting for a long long time (months probably) until your request is approved.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that you can still use a local debit or credit card to make purchases abroad. You will have to pay around $650 pesos for each dollar. The government taxes the heck out of every purchase abroad to discourage people from spending. Still there's a gap, so people use it while they can.

Western Union surprisingly gives the blue dollar rate here in Argentina so if you have access to a foreign bank account that is a decent way to do it. From what I can tell it tracks pretty closely to the rates on the “dólar hoy” website. On $500 transfers they charge $32.00 but you still come out ahead of the ATM or Credit Card conversion rates.

I had the same exact experience while travelling through Southeast Asia for several months a few years ago.

I came to the same conclusions you did, and I'm glad you were able to condense it in such a way.

It frustrated me though, to see that their youth were losing their old ways though. Of course it came with some benefits, but I saw them everywhere staring at their phone screens and could only feel nostalgic.

There are so many possible bad outcomes that can result from these options. Not a good idea at all imho.

This comment reminded me of a video Tim Ferriss posted recently on Youtube which basically said something very similar: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/kgO_Og-__HU

Very insightful!

I live in Argentina and this is correct. The (fake) official exchange rate is used by the government and media to paint a better picture of the terrible situation that we're in, it should not be used nor trusted anywhere to make any calculations on the cost of living, inflation, salaries nor anything else.

I wonder why Reuters made this error—pure ignorance, or are they trying to curry favor with Fernández?

Not all of us have the privilege of having been born un Sweden. Your comment reeks of privilege and dissociation with the rest of the world, where things work very differently.

I wasn't born in Sweden either. If it reeks of privilege is due to your own insecurities, I gave an example of something that already works and exists in the real world.

Just FYI: I come from Brazil where I lived for almost 3 decades, I grew up during hyperinflation, get off your high horse, mate.

Dude, it's a real world example - a personal experience - of how this problem can we well solved, and of how crypto is not the solution. That's what it is. Sorry you don't like it, but that's not relevant. What you might do is try to bring those systems to where you are.

I might be very wrong, but in my humble opinion Uber drivers are their workers as much as iOS app developers could be considered Apple employees or Youtubers could be considered Google employees. Just because you provide a service through someone's platform doesn't mean you're automatically their worker.

Uber drivers are meant to be interchangeable cogs. I know this because I used to be an Uber driver myself.

We couldn't set our own rates. We couldn't make our own decisions about the rides we were willing to take. We didn't have our own brand. And there was no way for customers to request us specifically, even if they preferred to be driven by us. This was all by design. Uber drivers are treated as an interchangeable commodity, not as brands.

I couldn't even wait for pings within the warmth of my own home without getting a letter graded report for not having my phone in my cradle. And it's not just the cradle that was a factor. If you drove too "aggressively", or if you drove too fast, their idiotic AI would scold you (and before someone says it, yes, that functionality is turned off now, but know that it was only turned off around the time that Uber was trying to make the argument in court that Uber drivers were not employees. Also note that even thought that particular functionality is turned off, Uber still tries to micromanage drivers in many other ways, even to this day).

This isn't to say that app creators and youtubers don't have their own set of problems with the app store and youtube, they certainly do. But compared to Uber drivers, they still have a thousand times more freedom than Uber drivers.

I agree. They should be considered employees, and be given the same benefits as employees. However, Uber doesn't agree, it says all of its drivers are contractors. So I'll continue saying that Uber's employees aren't the ones doing the driving, at Uber's own admission.

I think you misread the comment you replied to. They were saying they’re not employees, same as content creators for YouTube or independent iOS devs.

Parent agreed with your equivalence, but not your conclusion. Your conclusion was that they were both not employees, while the parent's conclusion was that they were both employees.

The legacy taxi industry blazed the trail (at least in the US) with their own arrangements with drivers. Drivers would lease the cab by the day and receive non-binding (but useful!) dispatch instructions. And taxi companies argued they were independent contractors too.

> non-binding (but useful!) dispatch instructions

This gave the entire industry a bad reputation for not showing up. I know when I drove airport shuttles we often rescued people who had tried to get a taxi.

Precommitting to an SLA can earn more customers’ trust, but it only works when every driver is confident about coming out ahead on average. $5 was too low for that job.

There’s a huge difference. App developers given no ”jobs” by Apple and have to source and grow their own customer base as well as set their own rates.

Employees of a company or even contractors, generally don’t get to do this.

I live in one of these countries. There are lots of people who earn a lot less than 12k/yr but buy brand new iPhones. Why? Because their resale value is awesome. They lose very little value over the years, because a lot of people want to own one, so even used ones retain value. Even if it's something old like an iphone 6 or something like that.

If you buy an android phone, chances are you're going to sell it for a lot less than you got it for unless you're talking about a flagship that's not too old.

It's also a status symbol, and as such they're bought not because of their intrinsic value.
