Agreed. An important thing to remember about the salon story mentioned above is that it is not 45 independent exposure experiments. Some people never shed much virus, or the stylist might not have been shedding very much on that particular day. If you tracked 45 different infected stylists, each working with one client, you might get very different results. This one story definitely does not prove you are safe at a salon as long as you are wearing a mask! (Although please do wear one if you must go).

Some schools that are opening for in-person classes this fall don’t anticipate being able to remain open all winter, so they have kept one virtual day to make sure everyone is prepared to switch back to all-virtual when it becomes necessary.

I have had the same experience with ordering Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh in the bay area. Everything I order arrives.

I tried using a different grocery delivery and about 30% of what I ordered was out of stock. This was especially frustrating because delivery slots were in short supply here, so I felt rude making another small order immediately to fill in missing items. With WF/AF I at least know what is out of stock when making my order so I can choose my own substitutions or not bother trying to get ingredients for a recipe if something critical is missing.

I am also in Mountain View and haven’t been in a store since February.

I have been able to place pick up orders with Nob Hill Foods for two weeks out (delivery has not been available lately).

One of my husband’s colleagues has had good luck with Draeger’s via Instacart (he said same day!).

If you make an Amazon Fresh cart and then refresh the page where you select your delivery window a lot between 9 pm and 12 am you can sometimes catch the new batch of delivery windows being released. For most Amazon Fresh warehouses they are released at midnight, but it is controlled by the local warehouse, and ours releases the new slots at random times in the evening. When I can get a slot Amazon fresh is my favorite—good selection and 90% of what I order actually arrives, which is great.

My husband also mentioned a friend successfully having toilet paper delivered from Home Depot.

Here's an interesting parasitic plant that you can find in the Bay Area:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cuscuta_californica

It's so bright orange that at first I wondered if it was spray paint left behind from construction. There's loads of it around the Bay Trail behind Google.

I've seen one at both rancho san antonio & the dish.

Failure rates for contraception are surprisingly high, even if you are using it responsibility. 1% is common, but that's not even over a person's lifetime, that's PER YEAR. That make lifetime failure rate more like 20%.

On top of that some people can't tolerate the most effective hormonal birth control methods methods.

I have the same question. I ordered some from Amazon for my kids. I hope this article means that they were carefully verified by Amazon, but it has still made me uneasy about using them. Just knowing fakes are common is really concerning.

Assuming you got paper glasses, on the inside of the arms of the glasses should be information about the ISO certifications and who manufactured it. Compare this against NASA's approved manufacturer list. If there's no info or they're not on the list, don't risk using them.

It's weird but I've got a co-worker who bought some cheap Chinese ones and actually block more light from a phone's flash LED than my legit, approved pair. I'd still never use them since my test is very simple and I don't understand enough about the properties that make for good solar filters.

Wouldn't a faker just steal the name of a manufacturer on the list?

As far as I understood, the "fake" part of these fake eclipse glasses is calling them eclipse glasses with the implication that they are safe when they are not or not made to the proper standards, not that they were forging real manufacturer information.

Your understanding seems wrong: https://www.eclipseglasses.com/pages/safety

If your understanding were correct, the difference between fake and real glasses wouldn't be minor ones such as round-ness of certain parts.

Don't risk it. I've got some extras I ordered directly from one of the NASA-endorsed suppliers. E-mail me your mailing address and I'll send you some. My e-mail is (also in the profile, but doesn't seem to be visible; maybe my karma's too low?) [HN user name] at x0.ms.

Is it really worth the risk?

Nooooooo! I clicked "The rules in more detail..." and it cleared my half-finished puzzle.

Yeah, I really wish it remembered your current puzzle state.

To me it seems like whether it should be possible to trademark that team name and whether it's a name the team should feel proud sticking with in 2017 are two pretty different questions.

I am happy with this legal decision because I don't want the government to be in charge deciding what is offensive and what's not. I also think it's long past time for them to pick a new name. Just because they can legally have that name doesn't mean they should keep it.

I agree with you on all counts. It's hard to get a new name though after 100 years of history. I don't think it will change under Snyder, since the name recognition is one of the things that makes it one of the most valuable franchises in all of professional sports.

>> Just because they can legally have that name doesn't mean they should keep it.

And there's no business reason to keep it either, imo. Changing the name means you've got an entire fan base who needs to buy new merch.

Because the Washington football team has a local monopoly on NFL football, I can't imagine the negative financial impact of a name change being that significant. Fans tend to care about the team being a winner above all else. So just put a winning product on the field and people will quickly forget about the old name.
