I’m in the same boat. And judging by the people I’ve met at Google and FB (before it was Meta) a lot of us are refugees from conservative minded illiberal cultures within North America, Asia, and Europe. Memes are our currency. A lot of the internal cultures of these two companies are steeped in formative memes of those born in the mid-80s who only had the internet to find their people in the early 2000s.

I was on the team that implemented all those things. We hated it. We did it because Steve had an epiphany while flying back from Hawaii on his jet that the seats were like, really nice. He wrote an email that all the apps needed to be like that. And thus we spent a year doing it.

This is my favorite metaphor today, and I read TFA which has lots.

There was Black music.

My favorite band of all time is Led Zeppelin. A large number of their songs especially in the early albums were heavily influence by black blues artists or so close that they later had to give songwriting credits to the original black artist.

Elvis also sang lots of blues songs originally created by black Americans.

Not just influenced, Led Zeppelin stole tracks from black musicians.

Even worse (in my opinion), is Eric Clapton, who stole so much music from black musicians, and then went on to disparage them and go on racist rants about who he wants in his country. Even worse when you see how he gave and received praise from artists like Jimi Hendrix.

I enjoyed this wild and trippy post.

Please try to enjoy each post equally.

As a Googler I appreciate your Standard Oil view of the potential sub-businesses.

As an engineer I dread having to do all the toil required to disentangle them, should that be the DOJ and USSC mandate.
