"It's one thing to burn down the outhouse and quite another to install indoor plumbing." - P.J. O'Rourke

A good example, especially if you are interested in any facet of video imaging, is [0] and here is why: 1) it provides standards references, 2) it provides usable first approximations you can execute right away to verify them, 3) its examples are well-selected. Since my company supports about the most conservative industry on Earth, we have to convince layers of bureaucrats we know what we are doing and the concepts therein helped us do it. We will not necessarily buy the company's products, but they certainly gave us some ability to attach numbers to what was a bit hand-wavy. In return the company is now 'of interest'.

mostly straightforward, but a question: should you use 'Antigua and Barbuda' as the country question would you have it as V__V_VV/V__/_V__V_V ? The rules are easy to get used to through the intro but edge cases may get odd.

Yeah it would show that, which might make it easy for some but harder for others.

That's my metric. A VF display is OK but an LCD, especially on kitchen appliances or white goods, is just about a guarantee of a short life span - never mind a touchscreen.

so long as a man rides his HOBBY-HORSE peaceably and quietly along the king's highway, and neither compels you or me to get up behind him,--pray, Sir, what have either you or I to do with it?" - Laurence Sterne

Reminds me of 'countdown roulette': system managers have buttons to slap if they want a launch hold. About the time batteries are initiated ("squibbed") a number of those buttons get pushed but the earliest of the bunch is the one who gets the blame for the hold.

It's hard to know what to mourn more here: the subsumption of NSU into Volkswagenwerke AG, or the demise of Citroën in the USA. Both manufacturers had genuinely fresh ideas; both provided truly mold-breaking machinery.

Guardian is behind the times. Languedoc, Roussillon, and Midi-Pyrénées have been subsumed into a region now called Occitanie. Bordeaux lies in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. And the statistics [0] show it isn't even close: Occitanie raises 2.5 litres of wine for every litre from Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

It is beyond dispute that the value of the wines are different. Bordeaux' wines are on average much better than Minervois', but wine lakes are the province of Occitanie.

Have a look at Derek Lowe's excellent blog [0] to view the depths of malfeasance, if not outright fraud, in which "studies" are created.

[0] https://www.science.org/content/blog-post/fakin-it-modern-wa... is just his latest in a long string of well-documented posts.

The article says Ive's consultancy contributed the power/ speed control button and the hinges. It isn't as though they let him play with anything important.

How long till these components fail prematurely? Ive's "beautiful" designs have mostly been mechanical engineering nightmares - e.g. bendable iPhone 6, the cracking polycarbonate case on the Mac Cube.
