Yeah I just use a wide mouth pint jar. Stays in the fridge until I feel like making something with the starter.

You don't have to make bread. My current favorite thing is sourdough English muffins, but King Arthur has a whole list of recipes that use the sourdough discard. The sourdough pancakes are excellent, especially after you drown them in maple syrup.

That's not true in the slightest. In the context of BART, we've lost the Key System. We've lost quite a bit of SamTrans bus service too because BART is expensive to run. Plenty of small towns in the northeast lost rail service since the inception of Amtrak.

If we're not talking about high speed rail, Amtrak provides service from Oakland to Seattle and Oakland to LA already. The best part is that Amtrak has a dramatically lower fatality rate than Brightline.

Upgraded signaling along the Caltrain ROW is in the works, but again you've got to balance the egos of the three big stakeholders. Caltrain is a far smaller problem to CAHSR than e..g Metro North is to Acela. The big issue is going to be the approach to downtown SF — which is still a ridiculous political football.

Disagree. Waiting for San Francisco to get its act together would potentially doom CAHSR. Building something now even if it means no downtown SF service could still reap benefits. Even Millbrae to LA would be very useful.

Mainline BART. e-BART uses standard gauge diesel trains and the half billion dollar Oakland Airport shuttle is a completely bespoke cable car monstrosity.

Highly recommend Paradise Lost by Peter Schrag. Raising revenue requires supermajority voter approval in most cases. A huge chunk of the budget is already allocated by voter mandates and the legislature fights over the scraps.


I'm not the person you responded to, but I've mostly just accepted that homebrew is another paper cut that you get from using a Mac. If I post publicly about it I'm usually not looking for help.

Years ago I worked with someone who strongly disliked brew because it leaned far too heavily on magic. I was okay with it because it seemed to work well. Brew still uses magic but now it just seems like I'm fighting it every single step of the way. I am le tired.


As a serious question, with no leading implied: what are you fighting about Homebrew? I can say with 100% earnestness that we're interested in improving the user experience, and we want to know where the pain points are for our users.

Actually hearing about them (instead of just cursing at us) is genuinely helpful, and we genuinely appreciate it.


Most PowerPC related stuff (e.g. Freescale MPC5xx found in a bunch of automotiver applications) can run in either big or little endian mode, as can most ARM and MIPS (routers, IP cameras) stuff. Can't think of the last time I've seen any of them configured to run in big endian mode tho.


For the large Power ISA machines, it's most commonly when running AIX or IBM i these days, though the BSDs generally run big too.
