It's a front end for all of those models. I haven't signed up for it but I'm considering it as I pay for both Kagi and Claude for a total of $35/month, whereas this would be $25 if I understand correctly.
Eh,that is the narrative he is trying to project so that when the courts issue injunctions or rulings against him he can claim to be victimized. Or that he tried his best to fulfill a campaign promise that can't be accomplished via exective orders. Many such cases.
I would feel a lot better about these discussions here if there was any acknowledgement whatsoever from self-described "free-speech absolutists" that large-scale mass propagation of disinformation can be manipulated by the powerful as a destructive force, and that this is a serious problem.
Do I want to ban speech? No. Am I pro-censorship? No! But democracy is in real trouble, and I'd love to be able to talk about possible solutions besides "they should teach critical thinking in schools" or "if you don't like it, read a book".
Yeah, I'd like to come to your defense here. While I do prefer working from home, I totally get what you're saying about the routine of walking to work.
I used to bike commute about 7 miles each way up and down some intense hills; it was part of my routine, and I had to do it. Now that I'm working from home, sure, I could go out and ride 15 miles every day, but it becomes a matter of discipline.
Same with socializing. I tend to prefer solitude, so socializing, like exercising, now requires discipline – I have to make myself do it – whereas before it was baked in, and unavoidable.
People recommending a dog aren't wrong. I do have a dog now, and walk at least 5 miles a day. My dog is an idiot so I can't really do the dog-park thing, but if you have a non-idiotic dog, there's some socialization to be gained there, too. BUT: it's a big commitment, and will have an impact on big life decisions later on like what apartment you can rent, whether you live in a city or a suburb, how easy it is to take a vacation or travel abroad, etc., so it's not like it's a no-brainer or an easy solution.
It’s free, but there are times when it’s more convenient to point to someone else’s nameservers, and some people like to keep their DNS separate from their registrations as a “separation of powers” thing, but I’ve never seen the utility in that.
Because sometimes it’s more convenient to point to someone else’s nameservers (I commented elsewhere in this thread about our AWS setup), and some people don’t want to give a single company control over their entire domain-to-web-server pipeline, though like I said I’ve never seen how that matters in practice.
> In February 2023, Gandi was acquired by Total Webhosting Solutions, forming a new brand, Your.Online. In June, the company announced drastic price increases, including a new monthly fee for mailboxes previously included for free.
Ah, I knew about the price increases but not the sale of the company.
One thing I really liked about Gandi was that they had a concept of Organizations, and users within those orgs, so we didn’t have to share a login within the org.
I’ve been moving my personal domains to Porkbun and Cloudflare, just to see which I like better. For domains at the company where I work I’d rather move them to Cloudflare, but they require that you use their DNS, and I haven’t yet felt like untangling how that will work with our AWS setup — we’re currently using Route53 and features there, including their certificate management and routing to specific ARNs.
Anyway, It’s a shame, because I was a big advocate for Gandi for a decade, and any time I could I always transferred domains there, for myself and the companies I worked for. In my digital life so far, Apple is the only one I’ve been able to stick with long-term. If they ever get broken up or if I get inexplicably banned, that one’s gonna hurt.
> Cloudflare, but they require that you use their DNS
This has been my only issue with them so far. Realistically it's not likely to cause any problems for either my personal or professional situations since I prefer to use CF DNS. It's simply a missing feature.
If something happens that makes me reconsider their DNS product I'd likely transfer the domains, even if I could change nameservers.
My sister had her Facebook account taken over by a bot of some sort some years ago. It was odd – they changed her profile photo over time, so at first it was just the regular profile photo, then it was the regular profile photo with a little bit of a different profile photo sort of creeping in on top of it, like if they had pasted the new one into a photoshop layer. Over a few weeks the new profile photo crept up until it was the only one, and then it became a sort of "call me for hot fun" spam account.
I assume they were sidestepping some sort of detection algorithm, but it happened during a time when she was losing her mind in real life so it was a strange kind of metaphor.
Re: hi {first name}, I’ve had pretty good luck with a name field and then a “nickname” field that explicitly asks, “how would you like us to greet you?”
