Read Hernan Cortez’s own description of the Aztec empire when he arrived.

Same thing is likely true in SoCal. The city of Azusa,CA has their own, non-Edison utility, and their rates are 1/3rd of the Edison rates in the towns around them.

Could Azusa sell power to the town around them?

+1 just installed this yesterday. Still kicking the tires

Been running it for 3 months, very pleased with my all AMD pc.

Oh how did I know the bigots would jump in these comments.

Hacker News is well on its way to become the Nazi bar by allowing the thinly veiled racism to survive.

A slowly boiling frog.

TIMBOBIMBO hahahhaha

The keys were personalized though. So this was for Timbo

Read through the whole article to see the password reveal. Was not disappointed!

That wasn't the password of the zip file that John cracked. TIMBOBIMBO was the password of a file that was inside the zip file, specifically a program. The program prompted for that password before it would continue running.

The blog post doesn't say the zip file password. It's not clear to me if the program that cracked the zip file even found the zip file password. It might just be able to find the plaintext but not the password.

I too was waiting to see what the ZIP password was after all these years. I wonder if there is a way to reverse the decryption key into the password, or is it a sausage machine like password hashing?

How long would it take to brute-force this on a modern PC?

I spent a lot of power trying to reverse the actual password and got this far:

    PROGRAM PATTERN MAX LENGTH TESTED
    bkcrack ?p 14
    bkcrack ?u?d 16
    bkcrack ?u 17
    bkcrack ?l 15
    bkcrack ?u?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l?l 16
    bkcrack ?u?l?u?l?u?l?u?l?u?l?u?l?u?l?u?l 16
    hashcat ?u?l?d 14
The author kindly modified bkcrack based on Tim's fuzzy recollection of what he thought he might have chosen for the password: https://github.com/kimci86/bkcrack/pull/56 and https://github.com/kimci86/bkcrack/pull/126. However, I ran out of time to work on this part and it seemed more important to get the actual code running.

Also, in the course of things I discovered that Tim used PKZIP inside the BASIC code using a password that used non-printing characters.

Wow, that would make brute-forcing it an order of magnitude slower if you're having to cycle through control characters too. I wouldn't have thought to do this, as I wouldn't risk it not being supported.

French people using the slang used by American racists? That’s a new one.

“State mandated dose of neutral..” what?

You clearly didn’t go the same brain washing public school systems I went to in America (California of all places) where they told us a gigantic pile of lies about basically everything that happened in our history that I’m still trying to unlearn 20+ years later.

How do you know for sure you're not just replacing these lies with others (perhaps more credible, better engineered and camouflaged)?

I’m not working those fields, neither will anyone I know. Will you, or anyone you know?

Those field workers, that literally keep us fed, have like 2/3 the life expectancy of the average American in the same area, or something ridiculous like that. Too lazy to google the exact numbers at the moment (on my phone). This is an open “secret” of the industry. Sadly slavery still exists, just doesn’t look like it used to.

I think you think you know more than you actually know. When I started reading about it, I wished I hadn’t. I felt sick to my stomach hearing the shit that still goes on to this day.

“Looting the coffers for welfare…” <- this is hilariously wrong. If I recall correctly, illegal typically pay into the system, but typically do not withdraw for fear of deportation. Your numbers are backwards. Last I checked, white Americans were the largest recipients of welfare by a substantial margin.

The reality is so bad, I can’t stomach learning any more about it. I feel so awful for those poor people.

Awwww snaaaaap, decentralized skyneeet here we goooooo! Kidding of course, but very exciting breakthrough if this pans out.

Thank you for posting. I’m of the same mind, so I appreciate you working on this publicly. I’ve bookmarked it to check it out next time I get frustrated haha (I have a “productivity things to try” bookmark folder)

You can give the binary a try. I tried to keep it really simple, and minimal.

Truth to be told, working on publicly is for selfish reasons (but nonetheless, it will make me very happy if it helps people)

I started a year and half ago, progress was extremely slow, I felt making it public would give me some push, besides improving my portfolio

Made a lot of progress once it was in the open, it did gave a positive push.

There’s a growing consensus that this number is way, way off, considering just how good women tend to be at masking compared to men.

I’ve met many women with the same story that didn’t even know they were autistic until they heard someone explain “masking” behavior as an autistic coping mechanism, and they said: “wait, isn’t that what everybody does?” They then go to a doctor to help them understand, etc. Lots of actresses have it, some of them are public about it.

I’m surprised to see that 80% number cited without bold caveats mentioning the limitations.

Historically most clinical studies up until around the 2000’s were done with a large percentage of participants being white men, often times there were NO WOMEN in the study.

A lot of rework is being done, which is great to see, but that’s going to take a long time before we have a true understanding of the variations between sexes caused by nature and/or nurture.
