Crows also pass on their knowledge.

I was about to come in and say this. I feel we greatly over estimate the intelligence of Chimps and underestimate crows and parrots.

Life comes with a lot of suffering inseparable from it. Different paths in life we can choose result in different kinds of struggle we onboard. Meaning is defined as what makes it overwhelmingly worthwhile.

A lot of religions/philosophies - Stoicism, Buddhism, Christianity etc. - are great for dealing with these problems for yourself, assuming you are already here. None, however, inspire the creation of new life to deal with this stuff. E.g. "Virtue is the highest good and its own reward" is great, but why create new life to have to deal with this if it can be avoided? It becomes circular and meaningless.

Any kind of dopamine-based pleasures are also somewhat degrading to one's humanity once you realize you're effectively being the mouse pushing the button, and are certainly far removed from having any meaning. What difference does it make how fast you were running on the hedonic treadmill if you're going to die?

If life is full of tragedy, why make more of it? So that you could still have love surrounding you when tragedy strikes? How is that not selfish but OP's view supposedly is?

Yes, I agree with you that you have to create some meaning in your life, make up something and convince yourself to believe in it, because there is hardly another option.

Actually, that's a good point - why is there no HN IRC?

There is a #hackernews on Libera.chat, and I believe I've seen a #ycombinator (or something similar) somewhere. No idea how official they are. But every HN-based community I've seen was a ghost town outside HN itself.

Have you written about your FI/RE story anywhere? Would be interesting to read. E.g. which SWR, did you end up moving somewhere cheaper, what do you do day-to-day now? How have you found actually living on your withdrawals - has it not caused more worry? How do you avoid the FOMO of seeing your former colleagues pressing on?

I've not shared my story. Much of the FIRE community is sick of hearing about engineers doing it. I was a SRE in Maps - I joined after Apple fired Scott. Many gave me a lot of hell for going to Apple Maps but there was a ton of work. I did move to Portland metro area during pandemic and actually got permission for perm remote work at Apple. But once I saw I could FIRE I waited for 1 more RSU vest and left. Zero FOMO - a coworker on my team left 6 months before me. I'm currently on a 4month vacation in Asia with wife. I'm still connected to former colleagues at Apple and visit the offices. I left Spring of 2022.

Anything like this in the UK?

I find this surprising. Did we not just have a pandemic, where people had to have fun without 'going out' and spending money? It was great to see so many people gathering in parks etc. instead of going to restaurants.

I found it very strange and sad that after the lifting of lockdowns people went right back to the way things used to be. Did we learn nothing? Such a squandered opportunity.

What happened to just meeting up in a street or at someone's place and 'hanging out' informally? At what point did it become near-obligatory to have a sit-down dinner or 'go out' to enjoy the company of friends?

I have my personal opinions with the pandemic, but I would have to agree as an opportunity to embrace more positive social behaviors. Surely didn't stick in my woods either. Plenty of things changed, but I would agree. The other part is that at this point were going on 4 years since and I would say my social habits in my age group just changed anyway, so IDK to be honest.

Just out of curiosity, and it may sound random, but does &T mean anything to you?

Haha yeah. I posted on totse from 2003 til the end and then moved to zoklet until that shut down too.

Could you give some numbers on this please? Really curious.

I am seeing rental yields still under 3.5% (zones 1-2, Victorian terraces converted to 1-2 beds).

Mortgage interest costs have gone up, and rents have gone up alongside them. I live in a 1-bedroom flat in Zone 2; before Covid, we rented a 1-bed with garden for £1450; when we moved a year ago, cost went up to £1600. Now we're moving again, and it looks like prices have gone up to £1700-1800.

Thank you - I doubt it has much to do with interest costs though. 1450 before Covid to 1750 now pretty much matches CPI exactly, so in real terms rents have remained the same. Not that it makes paying it any easier, of course - rents and house prices are still outrageously high.

It does not really say if any areas are exposed though. You can have near flat elevation but a very exposed path.

There's a topo layer in Organic! Close lines means (potentially) lots of exposure. That's not a silver bullet, though, as sometimes the topo shows nothing special, but when you get there you can have some exposure. For the cliffs in my area, there's also different shading and a line with triangles poking out in the direction of the fall line. So as long as you're hiking in places that are somewhat popular, you will have this extra info to rely on.

Doing true exposure on a per-segment basis would mean a new key I think, not to mention how much additional data this would require for the maps. If you're worried about the terrain to the point of needing highly detailed topo maps, it's probably better to get one of the many such maps in AllTrails (though the app is rather clunky)

As with all things outdoors, technology will only ever get you so far. Situational awareness and emergency preparedness are skills you should have if you're going somewhere you've never been before. Always prepare for more than you expect, and if you're not sure that you're prepared once you get to somewhere sketchy, it's always best to turn back.
