Unix didn't beat Windows. Unix beat VMS and LISP machines and AS/400 and various other minicomputer operating systems. In fact, if we're talking about mainline commercial Unixes, NT started beating the shit out of them in the late 90s - if Unix lovers hadn't had the free ixen (Linux, BSDs) to fall back on it would be a sad state of affairs indeed.
