I don’t think enough credit is given to the role the GPL played in making Linux successful. The more liberal BSD-style licenses resulted in every hardware maker selling their own slightly incompatible fork of UNIX where las the GPL forced everyone to unite behind a single code base, which is what you want for an operating system.
