Decades ago i would have said someone is trying to sabotage Microsoft
But nowadays, with experience (this is not the first time that this is happening), it seems like it's the opposite, Microsoft is constantly trying to sabotage its "clients", i'm using quotes here because what are the alternatives they are allowed to use?
Microsoft is sabotaging itself. There will come a time when Microsoft becomes too big and will be split into several companies. When this happens, the dysfunctional state of their applications will grant other companies the room to be competitive.
