Ask HN: What is the best camera for content creation
2 points by charlesrach 32 days ago | hide | past | favorite | 6 comments
So I've been planning on starting content creation and I want to do YouTube and tiktok and all that. I'd be doing vlogging but am also planning on doing travelling. For example I'm going to Greece with my dance group and want to film a bunch of stuff there. What would be the best camera for a mix of vlogging but also action shots? If you have any questions that can help narrow down my search let me know. And for now let's talk camera specs first and budget later.

Nikon makes a mirrorless Z30 with interchangable lenses. It is designed as a "4K setup for creators, vloggers and streamers" It comes standard with an equivalent 24-75mm Z-series lens (DX[2]) which is scenic to portrait, and costs less than a phone. Nikon [0]. Ken Rockwell Review [1].

OF COURSE, others are fine.

Disclaimer: I am a Nikon nut. And this is not a sales pitch. I just have had success with the mirrorless line.

I go to a nearby camera store to help the local economy and compare models, with the assistance of staff who know me by now.

[2] FX lenses are longer equivalent focal length due to the DX (APS-C) sensor. But the small sensor makes the camera smaller and lighter.

In the past I've shot video with broadcast TV gear, $30k+ cameras. To my eyes, an Apple iPhone Pro 15 shoots better quality video. These days camera sensors are amazing. But lens choice remains the biggest constraint. The aforementioned iPhone is only good as long as your shooting can be accommodated by the built in lens.

My advice is to clarify what distances, field of view, zoom range you require. (Digital zoom is of limited value). Having got your lens specs sorted, then you start looking at which cameras will suffice.

Without more information, I would seriously consider BlackMagic gear, e.g. https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/blackmagicpocketci...

I have an iPhone 16 pro do you recon just stick with that? It would be for simple walking around and vlogging and action shots of stuff going on around me like dance performances and such.

I would do tests in the different scenarios that you are likely to encounter and judge the results.

The one concern might be the audio. Depending on the environments you might need proper audio input. With prosumer gear you have more choices with lenses and audio.

The big Twitch IRL streamers are shifting to the DJI Osmo Pocket 3.

I've seen that but I feel like it's slightly limited in the recording features because of the compact size
