What's the Next Thing?

Years ago, people would have said machine learning (right), devops (okay), iot (yeah, no). what's the new exciting thing 10 years later?

IoT is still expanding steadily; the hype peddlers and fad chasers have largely ignored it because there's no bubble for them to cash in on. Smart TVs, internet enabled appliances, robot vacuums, Alexa devices, Phillips Hue lighting, smart thermostats, etc. are all IoT.

The industrial IoT market is still expanding too but ordinary developers wouldn't be able to observe it unless they work in that niche specifically.

More specifically most are IoTwNAtbOBiSDoT (Internet of Things we Never Asked to be Online, But it's Shoved Down our Throats)

Don't forget the lackadaisical security in most consumer IoT too. I'm more than happy to agree that most consumer IoT is crap. But that's entirely orthogonal to whether it's growing or not.

If you mean the current marketing hype, in the same vein as those hyped niches, currently it's LLM AI.

Robot assistants.
