Mark Zuckerberg has rebuilt Meta around Llama (yahoo.com)

This situation reminds me of the strategy Google used when it launched Chrome. They effectively set the standard and left competitors behind by offering it for free. Although Chrome didn't generate significant income on its own, it was vital for Google's overall strategy of selling advertisements.

Similarly, Meta is adopting a similar approach by giving away Llama. While it may not be essential to their revenue, it is an important tool for their broader income strategy. By improving their products by using it, they can stay relevant in the age of AI. They also gain the advantage of controlling a tool eventually used by millions of users, allowing them to adapt the tool to meet their own needs to their own advantage. Yes, this approach may cost them money in the short term, but in the long run, it helps prevent them from becoming irrelevant. This strategy seems quite smart to me.
