Apoorva Mehta founded Instacart in 2012 at age 26. He tried to apply for funding through Y Combinator but missed the deadline. He eventually got a meeting by using the Instacart mobile app to deliver a six-pack of beer from 21st Amendment Brewery to a Y Combinator partner[10] and was admitted to the summer of 2012 batch.[12] Y Combinator helped Mehta raise $2.3 million in funding[10] and enabled him to meet his two co-founders, Max Mullen and Brandon Leonardo.[11]
This is just so bizarre. As an applicant, why the hell would I want to use my ex/current-employer as channel for my next one? As an employer, I would probably be annoyed.
Is there something particular with NYC culture which makes this anything but weird and out of touch?
I may not have much NYC pizza experience (NJ FTW) but in my opinion there's good pizza and great pizza -- rarely bad pizza! If I was having a pizza-less day and suddenly got one of these, it'd definitely be a +1 :)
(Tounge-in-cheek from a dude who loves pizza and has been refining a home recipe every Friday for the last few years).
