Looks like I will stay with Fairmail for the foreseeable future. I should really give the dev some money for his outstanding work

FairEmail is fantastic. It is definitely not the prettiest looking email client, but it has so many thoughtful features that it blows other clients out of the water. NetGuard by the same author is also worth a look (and paying for).

Not to mention, Mozilla has been caught more than once collecting information it should not. And K-9 was never a 'privacy first' client.

FairEmail has many defaults specifically designed to keep your info private. And it also has no tracking/etc. I cannot imagine a Mozilla product with zero tracking.

So actually just K9 Mail rebranded as Thunderbird.

Is there an Android email application, Gmail not included, that looks and functions like iOS Mail?

Looking for something not ugly with general polish, combined inbox, etc.

I think that was always phase 0 of the plan.

I'm not a good judge of the rest of it, but K9 does have a combined inbox.

See if Aqua Mail ticks the boxes you need/want. I've been a happy user for many years
