Headline and first three paragraphs seem like the usual misreporting of renewables, but the rest of the article goes into depth about what's actually going on, I was pleasantly surprised.
For reasons I don’t fully understand, many electricity retailers in Australia still charge like we’re in a pre-renewables world.
For example, in Western Australia we consistently have excess renewable generation during the day due to the prevalence of rooftop solar, but our retailer, Synergy, still charges businesses a higher rate for power consumed during the daytime when it is plentiful, and a lower rate in the evening when the grid is reliant on comparatively expensive gas generation.
When you are a monopoly you are maximizing profit, not common sense. They are probably making way more money during the day now amd the same as before at night and will continue to do so until the regulator approves/mandates a different pricing scheme
