So I just talked to a new person that I randomly met and he happened to work at one of the FAANG companies. After an hour talking he told me: "you should be a product manager!"
This was after I told him that I was reassessing my career as a software engineer. In software engineering I've noticed that I like (hardware/web/binary) hacking, game development and chrome extension development thus far. I haven't yet had a 10 out of 10 hype motivation for web dev or stuff like data structures and algorithms (more like 7.5 out of 10 for both of them - I've been a web dev for 5 years now). I asked him why, because I never heard that before as my social circle/network doesn't know much about the role.
He said: "you have many interests. You studied a double bachelor in psychology and computer science and a double master in game-design and computer science. You've on top of that also studied a bit of business and UX-design. You're a very curious person and you're interested in the overarching process of product development. On top of that you combine qualitative and quantitative data. I have friends who are PMs and you're giving off a similar vibe."
It was odd to see a person have a read on me that well and connecting that to a role, so I have to take this seriously. Being a multidisciplinary person, it seems that people normally don't have a strong read on who I am as a person at all but this person just after meeting me for an hour read me like a book.
How does a (Dutch) European software engineer become a PM? Should I apply for an internship?
